378314 2005-08-04 22:18:00 For those amongst us who know about these things.
What is the latest on this and do you use it?

Why are we not all using it and bypassing telecom?

378315 2005-08-04 22:38:00 I use skype in conjunction with spontania several times a day and have been very pleased with it. Good performance and picture quality.
Saves me a fortune.
I know there are other products about but haven't had time to try them out yet.

As for bypassing telecom, I believe they are about to trial a new VoIP service themselves, don't know if it's free or not (wouldn't imagine so)

378316 2005-08-04 23:07:00 It's going to be pretty hard bypassing telecom, because I doubt they would let you have a broadband connection without a telephone service..
As for the other companys that wholesale telecom products, I believe you still need your phone connection..
If you were on paradise cable you might get around it :2cents:

378317 2005-08-05 03:03:00 the interface with the POTS is the trick (POTS stands for Plain Old Telephone Service)

as far as I know there is one place that provides a POTS number for voip is iTalk (http://www.italk.co.nz). But they require a credit card before they will talk to you, and I don't have one of those. If you do though, you can buy a bugtone phone from DSE, plug it into your network, and start making calls.

It's also very hard to avoid telecom, most people pay telecom for their jetstream connection, either directly, or indirectly. And telecom won't give you jetstream without a live phone number. (sigh)

378318 2005-08-05 20:51:00 Im not sure how well SkypeOut works but Im told its great. My mate in the US has no phone line, just wireless internet. I wonder if we could do a similar thing with woosh?!

There is a side to Skype that'll give you a POTS number IIRC

378319 2005-08-05 22:11:00 The response to the question suggests a lack of interest, much to my surprise. Cicero (40)
378320 2005-08-05 22:37:00 Not sure if this is Skype but...
my telephone is over the interent with "Ihug Connect" plan through Wired Country. Which they have stoped offering btw, (was told it was not profitable).
But call quality is generally on par with telecom and is cheaper too.
Had my umbilical cord to Telecom cut 6 months ago and has been sweet ever since.
