377384 2005-08-01 16:27:00 Seems as though the bad guys get away with it every time, but this time one gets a wrist-slap, a suspended sentence and a cushy job...............

Sven Jaschan, the young German youth at the time who admitted to writing the Sasser worm, has been given a 21-month suspended sentence for his crimes.

Jaschan, who had also admitted to creating Netsky.A, was tried behind closed doors this week by a juvenile court in Germany, since he only turned 18 the day before he was arrested. Indeed, it was largely thanks to his youth at the time of the crime that he avoided a harsher penalty - the maximum penalty for releasing a virus being a five-year jail sentence.

Jaschan was arrested following a tip-off from some of his (presumably now former) friends who were hoping to become the first individuals to benefit from Microsoft's anti-virus reward program. Microsoft has revealed that the two informants will be able to share the reward, now that Jaschan has successfully been convicted.

After publicly making it known that he was looking for work in the IT security industry, Jaschan was offered a job in September 2004 by German security firm Securepoint.

It looks like Jaschan is now eligible to start work. :angry

377385 2005-08-01 23:37:00 if i remember correctly there was a stink when a sicurity firm hired one of the convicted viru's writers. standing unwritten rule of the sicurity industry is to not employ virus writers, a little rule a cartain company ignored. tweak'e (69)

377387 2005-08-02 00:57:00 Any word on what Kevin Mitnick is doing these days?
Last I hear he was thinking of doing online security as well

377388 2005-08-02 01:19:00 The last I heard of Kevin Mitnick was when he was on Leo Leporte's show a few months ago. He was not working anywhere, and was on a book tour promoting his latest (only?) book. He was in Canada at that time..but since, I don't have the latest. SurferJoe46 (51)
