376988 2005-07-31 05:28:00 Right now, I'm planning to join the army as an armorer when I'm 17. Is their any reason for me to do 7th form?

Armorer is definately the job for me. I've always had a intrest in firearms and I can't think of any other job I'd like to do. :)

376989 2005-07-31 05:30:00 I would say make the step into your career. Metla (12)
376990 2005-07-31 05:43:00 if there in no requirement to go to 7form for that job why bother.

btw have you already applied for the job ? at a guess i would say you havn't, which which case do you need anything from 7th form for any other job/carrer as you may not get the job you want.

keep your options open :2cents:

376991 2005-07-31 05:45:00 Go for it...

But do you want to still be in the army, because you don't have the skills in the "real" world, when your 40?

A year out doing the 7th form may open your eyes to other options, or even a few years checking out the rest of the world first before committing.

Don't close your options too soon ...

Well off you go - but don't grizzle if you have to go off and shoot people/

376993 2005-07-31 06:01:00 dunno if i agree with that netchicken . he could always be a gunsmith when he leaves the army . if i remember correctly you only have to serve 4 years so even he gets sick of it he will still be young enough to go out and retrain in something else .

going to 7th form dosn't neccarly open ones eyes to the world .

376994 2005-07-31 06:38:00 Well the website says year 11 completeion - whatever year 11 is.
It also says:
Trade Training School (TTS), Trentham, Wellington
Your initial trade training will be conducted at TTS, where you will be introduced to the Royal NZ Army Logistic Regiment. This four-week course provides you with an insight into the Logistic Regiment and the part that you will play in the Army.

Basic Mechanical Engineering Trade Skills (BMETS)
Six-month course designed to give you the basic knowledge and skills required for the trade. Subjects include hand tools, arc/gas welding, mill and lathe work and also technical drawing.

The second part sounds pretty useful to me. Even leaving later those skills will lead to a job no problem.

376995 2005-07-31 06:54:00 im doing 7th form this year, only because i want to go to uni. you will need to do year 13 (level 3) to gain uni entrance if you decide to do this later through your life, other than that i think 7th is pretty cool, teachers are more laid back towards you, but you will still need to do the work, and they dont treat you like a junior  Prescott (11)
376996 2005-07-31 07:18:00 I think our army uses the British rather than American spelling for that job.
So calling it armourer on the application form might be tactful...

I thought armourers supplied the heavy stuff for others to shoot. They don't actually fire it off themselves, that's for the cavalry to do.

Reminds me of a friend who was an armourer in the NZ Airforce. His outfit's motto was:

Armourers live so that others may die.
