Regret to say I do not share the public's great admiration for Anthony Hopkins -- he seems very same-ish and boring to me. Whether he is a butler or Hannibal Lector he just seems the same (though he was good in the bookshop one). Each to his own though !! Misty  |

Denzel Washington Morgan Freeman Jack Nicholson Sean Penn Nicolas Cage Tom hanks Al Pacino ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Susan Sarandon Julia Roberts Juliette Binoche Judi Dench Julianne Moore Cate Blanchett ---------------- Good but not good enough for my Top List: Cameron Diaz and Meg Ryan - nice eye candy but no depth Sean Connery - loved him years ago but he is past it now Tom Cruise - too pretty although he was better in Collateral |

They go to a movie to see Tom Cruise being Tom Cruise, whatever the role. George Clooney is another example. These "stars" don't actually have a great range of acting talent. They are still readily recognisible as themselves. By contrast an actor is someone who is the character they are playing. In other words the audience doesn't automatically see the "star" but rather the person in the story. Indeed the signature of a great actor is that you don't recognise them at all. IMHO Meryll Streep is one of the few - and she isn't generally regarded as a star by Hollywood because she is different in every film. Possibly Charlize Theron is a worth successor. |

There are certain actors, e . g . Robin Williams, Tom Cruise, Cameron Diaz, that remain who they are on the screen and not the character they are playing . Often this ruins it for me as I keep seeing 'Robin Williams' acting the part and comparing what he did in other films . This is one reason I enjoy independent and foreign films, in that I have not seen the actors before and readily accept them as the character they play . |
