| 377851 | 2005-08-04 02:29:00 | Personally I carry a cd of tools and a screwdriver, If its not a quick fix then I take it with me, I refuse to pull computers apart on peoples tables, beds, couches or sit for mind-numbing hours while replacing system files or watching virus scanners and spyware tools go about their work. I also refuse to source and install second hand parts and dont waste my time on comps that are worthless (meaning too old). They won't be happy with my bill for repairing a computer worth $40 bucks..... |

| 377852 | 2005-08-04 05:39:00 | agree metla, I'll tell someone wethere I think the pc is 'worth' fixing if its an old dunga............as for taking stuff back to the shop ......well ....then you have to return it again and if they live 20km out in the country that's a lot of time and travelling.........most of my work is done 'onsite'..... pctek: dunno about your particular methods but you said Bit much carrying an entire PC with you stuck twiddling my thimbs while waiting ........nah mate.....actually i'ts not bother to chuck it in the car with with box of bits and my briefcase full of cds/etc......and often times its MUCH faster to use to run a scan on someones pc, (specially an older - slower one), if they have such an infection that I cant even install an antivirus prog etc... also you said you can get a decent idea first from asking about symptoms .......ah I'd beg to differ there.....sure you can get some idea but many folks cant even tell you what an error message said or if they do it's quite innacurate reporting of the symptoms lol..... hot glue gun well you never know when you'll need it......say for example to stick a reset button back onto a pc co case ......(even the plastic buttons on the front panel of those pc co thingys are CRAP)....... also carrying a few cpus' around is useful........a known good socket A or Pentium or whatever can save you a bit of bother by simply swapping it out for theirs in some cicrumstances....that'll tell you if theirs is stuffed without travelling all the way back to your workshop to test their system then haveing to return travel to take it back after the repair........travellign costs money and takes time from your day...... |

How many dead CPUs have you found? I did that sort of work for years, and I could count the dead CPUs on one hand. -Qyiet |

Ah but I don't. If they can't tell me and its sounds like major spyware or a lot of diagnosing I tell them to bring it to me. Which they do. Especially when I say it will work out cheaper in the long run than me going back and forth. |

| 377856 | 2005-08-04 08:18:00 | Fair enuf .....however I've based my business on goin to the customer I'm a 'mobile tech' as the original poster here is planning to be......occasionally someone will bring the pc to me but 98% of the time I go there......and as things go it's not costly to them and it's a lot quicker and easier for THEM than other options........ | drcspy (146) | ||
| 377857 | 2005-08-04 08:19:00 | actually lots of customers simply dont want to or cant deal with unpluggin the pc it's a hassle or even in the case of many oldsters simply beyond them so they LIKE my service | drcspy (146) | ||
