376874 2005-07-31 01:14:00 It's all part of the "Knowledge Economy" Helen is often on about, Terry.

Get enough NZQA credits (none less that Excellent) and you too can become a rubbish collector. (In fact there was a school which gave credits for picking up rubbish.)

376875 2005-07-31 01:41:00 Oh dear, I'm beginning to think you have hit the nail on the head Graham

I can remember well as a 10 or 11 year old in the top form of a humble Black Country 'working class' primary school (7 -11 years old) being taught what I suppose would be called materials science, or properties of matter now . How metals were good conductors of electricity and heat, and non metals weren't, and how metals expanded when heated, and being sent to the neighbouring secondary school to borrow a piece of apparatus to show this .

This consisted of a brass tripod with a circular hole and a suspended brass sphere that just passed through the hole when cold, but when the sphere was heated with a bunsen burner it rested on the edge of the hole because it had expanded .

376877 2005-07-31 03:43:00 How does making a stupid wind chime count as an assignment? And why do you need a big list? Take a look in those crap shops in the mall and you see those things all the time, made out of any old junk. Simple.

I agree, should teach either proper science or at least useful trade skills. Like plain old woodwork, metalwork and cooking.

376878 2005-07-31 04:09:00 the school system has changed...... techiekid (7219)
376879 2005-07-31 04:15:00 So it seems Techiekid, not getting at you at all, we can only do as the teachers tell us, but it does seem a bit strange to dress up a topic with the grand title of Materials Technology, which then turns out to be something other than. :waughh: Terry Porritt (14)
376880 2005-07-31 04:20:00 Just had a thought for a question to ask your Materials Technology teacher.

Why does a brass gong go 'boing....' when struck, where as an indenticle one made of lead go 'thud' ?

I think Techo should have a word with teacher and explain the cretinosity of the project. :)
