664319 2008-04-30 08:21:00 Had a bad experience with a psu today.....

unpacked and setup a new Acer pc a lady had brought back from asia.

I forgot to check the psu voltage .......bugger......well thats what I said when I plugged in the power and it went ZZZZZZZZTTTTTT........

Bloody thing was, (of course) set to 115v......grrrrrrrrrrr.......dead psu......

new one supplied......bugger

anyway having a look at the info panel on the side of this thing.....and this is what I saw:

PSU: Untitled_00011209540275.jpg (www.imagef1.net.nz) (27 KB)

I was frankly disgusted at the 250w rating and the rail amperage rating.......bloody cheap crap probably worth about $15 to Acer in bulk...what rubbish.....I pity anyone who adds another hdd or similar...

664320 2008-04-30 12:47:00 hope your client paid for it then...
Reminds me of the time I came back from Japan and plugged in my lovely stereo, tv etc, turned them on via a plug box and zap zap zap... I learnt my lesson

664321 2008-04-30 16:12:00 UM........Well the client offered.........i'm gonna go her 50.50 after all I'm 'supposed' to be a qualified and experienced tech (which i am)

so really its my fault.......but my take on it is that had she gone and plugged it in herself she'd be paying all of the repair/replacement cost.......

it wasn't her fault.....but since she offered....and a new psu cost me $90 (ouch).......

664322 2008-04-30 22:24:00 If 250w is sufficient for the PC, I don't see anything wrong with it. I dont think Acer had upgrading in mind. Most branded pcs even have a tamper sticker to ensure the case is not opened.

My 320w iCute psu has only 16a on a 12v rail, and have 4 ide drives running off it. Having said that, my current pc is 6 years old. The only thing wrong with the psu is it is noisy.

And look at the rest of the components in it. More rubbish.

I get more Acers in here than anything else - with hardware problems.

664324 2008-05-01 00:29:00 Haha! I was waiting for pctek to come along and put the boot in to Acer again. :p

Any brand-name PC will be the same. HP/Compaq, Lenovo, Dell etc.
Don't think I've ever seen a decent PSU in a brand-name PC.

No, but some HPs had decent motherboards. Some others even have decent hard drives.

Acer consistently has crap everything.

drcspy - you should have ensured you blew it up totally and gone 50/50 on a whole new decent PC.

It probably depends largely on which manufacturer of the parts will give them the best deal at the time.
I have seen a few Acer machines with Seagate hard drives.
