664134 2008-04-30 03:27:00 Have you had a look at the EEEEPC? It runs Linux and is pretty cheap. Not sure if it will take an iPod but it would be a laptop for dummies. There are a number of users on this forum that would recommend the EEEEPC. vitalstatistix (9182)
664135 2008-04-30 04:29:00 I'd only recommend the EEE PC if ultra portability (or a low price) was crucial to you (~$540). But you can get a full blown (new) notebook (which will run iTunes) for probably at least $800. I think you can get apps for linux which can load music onto an iPod, but if I was wanting to use a PC to do actual work, I probably wouldn't want to do it on an ultra portable (to the extent that the EEE pc is anyway). utopian201 (6245)

Ummm... I don't think I'd ever use an EEE to write essays. I'd go with a cheap and nasty Acer from DSE if that's all I was after.

You can easily get them for under $1000, and they're not bad computers. Although they're certainly not good ones.

EEE's have their upsides, and I'd love one, I just don't think I'd ever want to type at one for an extended period of time.

You can use Open Office, which is free, to do word processing. But I'd try and get a copy of word from someone, as the non-existant spellchecker on OO drives me absolutely bananas... or more bananas rather. :)

664138 2008-04-30 07:13:00 Perhaps a Dell Insprion would be ok for you. Here is a link

www1.ap.dell.com

The cheapest one is $900, but you can get a discount since you are a uni student. Get the discount here

www.dell.communicates.to

Its for uni students, and you get 3% discount, which pushes it down to $873. Its not alot, but hey, $27 is good :)
