664175 2008-04-30 02:26:00 have windows xp home on my pc..and have added another hard drive.. ie C and D..

have purchased external drive F..

i live away from home during week and would like to be able to access files on the ext drive using friends laptop during the week..

so far i have had no luck installing the files on the new hard drive or reading them when away...

the programs that do backup copies seem to only look at one drive on my pc

i am not really up with how to partition or anything and wondered if there was a program out there that would be good for me to use to sort this

664176 2008-04-30 02:31:00 what OS is on the friends laptop and what format did you format the hard drive in if you know? does your friends laptop have 98, ME? if so it wont support 132Gb or so and doesnt support NTFS. if its got 2k up it should be fine williamF (115)
664177 2008-04-30 02:33:00 Hi, are you saying you cant write files to the external drive f:?

Windows has a program called briefcase which you could use to keep your files between the f: and whatever (my doc's) in synch.

What files? Documents and photos?

Just file copy them using Windows Explorer .
You use any sort of actual backup software it will make a backup file in iuts own format rather than just file copying them as is .

SO long as your friend has a photo viewer of some sort and Word then no problems . . . . . . . . . .

664182 2008-04-30 09:52:00 You can also use SyncToy from MS that does a great job keeping documents in sync. beeswax34 (63)
664183 2008-05-01 00:43:00 Maybe consider the freeware version of syncback, a popular semi automated back up program, with plenty of options. I did a review here (pcsourcepoint.blogspot.com), along with the free DriveImage XM (www.runtime.org)L back up program... kahawai chaser (3545)
