| 378525 | 2005-08-05 03:13:00 | The NCEA buries bones and chases cars, and the organisation responsible for administering it is a total disaster zone . Thats the official verdict of a State Services Commission review released this week . Reports of this sort are always diplomatically written . The people who write them want to be commissioned to write more reports in future . But even with that constraint, this report is a real ripper . Just get a load of this: "The overarching finding of the Review Team is that the lack of stable leadership at Chief Executive level has prevented NZQA from developing into a mature and high performing organisation and that is reflected across most dimensions of capability . " (Translation: The chief executives office has had a revolving door, with eight different CEOs in eight years, with the consequence that the place is stuffed from top to bottom . ) "Fully developed systems and a culture of performance that embraces the notion of individual accountability, have not embedded in the organisation . " (The staff are a bunch of unfocused, unmanaged, lazy buck passers . ) "The Executive Management Committee gave scant attention to what was one of the major challenges confronting NZQA, the implementation of NCEA . " (The place has been run by a bunch of overpaid fatcats who have completely lost the plot . ) "The management experience of NZQAs senior management team is variable and management skills and competencies require further development . " (The place is run by pointy-headed policy wonks who wouldnt have a clue how to manage a team of people . ) The Review Team received consistent feedback that NZQA needs to be able to engage more proactively and credibly with stakeholders and be prepared to hear and act on constructive criticism . " (NZQA staff are up themselves, arrogant, born to rule tossers, who have, due to a complete lack of Ministerial oversight, been able to run riot in the sector . ) No . It doesnt get much worse than this . Particularly when it is the education of our young people that is at stake . And at a critical time in their preparation for tertiary studies . What a good thing it is that the nations parents are soon to have their opportunity to pass judgement on the man responsible for it all: Education Minister Trevor Mallard . |

"The Executive Management Committee gave scant attention to what was one of the major challenges confronting NZQA, the implementation of NCEA . " (The place has been run by a bunch of overpaid fatcats who have completely lost the plot . ) And, perhaps never had a grasp of the plot in the first place . Let's hide in a workshop on [choose your topic] "The management experience of NZQAs senior management team is variable and management skills and competencies require further development . " (The place is run by pointy-headed policy wonks who wouldnt have a clue how to manage a team of people . ) These would be the PC hand wringers as opposed to the vigilante type The Review Team received consistent feedback that NZQA needs to be able to engage more proactively and credibly with stakeholders and be prepared to hear and act on constructive criticism . " (NZQA staff are up themselves, arrogant, born to rule tossers, who have, due to a complete lack of Ministerial oversight, been able to run riot in the sector . ) Plus they ran roughshod over any opposing views from within while ignoring the rest . Workshop anyone? No . It doesnt get much worse than this . Particularly when it is the education of our young people that is at stake . Gone to hell in a hand cart Cic . More's the pity my kids are caught up in this dreadfull experiment, well, ones still there, the others just chucked in the towel . |

I got handed a CV a while ago with a bunch of NZQA qualifications on it. Having no idea what they ment, I turned to the NZQA website. I was able to find the references to the qualification involved, but I was dammed if I could find out it the guys IT qualification ment he knew how to use excel, or if he new how to MAKE excel. There was a very in depth course thing (that I didn't want/have time to read.. ) not a lot of help to me overall So, I wrote an email to them, saying (in summary) I looked for information on your site. and was unable to find it, so gave up. hopefully you can make your site better. This was the last I expected to hear on the matter. However they *rang* me to discuss my complaint about the website (which was an excellent response) however they did not take my point seriously (even though the guy who rang me was unable to tell me the information I wanted when I gave him my example) and more or less told me that I was too stupid to use their system (which was perfect in every way). The arrogance left me stunned. I guess the process was right (they called). But the whole point of the excersise seemed to have bypassed the guy who called. -Qyiet edit:fixed some spelling..I did check it before I posted, I promise |

| 378530 | 2005-08-05 09:29:00 | The new qualifications may be a bit difficult to understand to start off with, but if you actually try to understand them it's not impossible. Anyone who claims they make no sense is obviously very lazy or very stupid. NZQA doesn't help themselves by doing stupid things like removing 'Not Achieved' grades from results etc, but the reality is that students still learn the same content at school. Provided you take traditional subjects such as Calculus, Chemistry, English, etc your education certainly isn't at any risk. You will still leave school knowing just as much, if not more than previous years. :) | maccrazy (6741) | ||
| 378531 | 2005-08-05 09:43:00 | See, its fine after all, Those that can see the faults in it are just lazy and stupid. |

| 378532 | 2005-08-05 09:57:00 | Those that can see the faults in it are just lazy and stupid. Sorry, that's not what I mean. Obviously there are lots of issues and problems, but in terms of reading the results, true they are a bit messy, but to say that they are impossible to understand is not a fair statement. I guess the point I am trying to make is that though people have problems with NCEA, they shouldn't doubt the quality of what students learn as someone suggested above. :) |

Now Tom, I'm no fan of Aunty Helen, Uncle Michael or bully boy Cousin Trevor. Nevertheless I need to point out that it was the National Government in the mid 90s which introduced this brave new system. Labour however do seem to have embraced it. Nevertheless I'm going to have to give you three strokes - for your own good - just to remind you to be more accurate. :D |
