664744 2008-05-09 21:31:00 So no Ubuntu any more? I guess you have let your son take over?

Nope my son hasn't taken over...yet

I miss Ubuntu (coz it wasn't windows!) but couldn't use it to it's full potential as I'm not that good with scripts etc. I got it going so I could email, web browser, etc but couldn't fix any issues with it and my kids need XP as that's what they use at their school.

664745 2008-05-09 23:01:00 Couldn't you get a second cheap pc to use Ubuntu on (are you dual booting?). I have noticed a similar pattern. Maybe its because Linux was designed from the ground up to be a networking operating system ( runs and hides )

You would be better to go to the Ubuntu/Linux forums. The samba team could give you a much more informed answer (if indeed there is an explainable difference in performance)

Out of curiousity, what kind of "issues" were you having jabbapam?

Was dual booting.
i just don't have the time to be 'playing' with a linux system.

So therefore just run any version of windows I guess.

Or alternatively you may get out of your comfort zone and actually learn how to use a version of Linux.

Not that I use any version of Linux but it apparently suits for some people.

You could try playing with virtual machines.

There was document formating issues between .doc and .odt files. You could use both but each time you open one or the other your formatting would alter and windows wouldn't open a .odt file.
Hardware setup was a pain particularly wireless cards as manufacturers didn't supply a Linux driver and you had to rely on a Linux wizard to build one.
Graphics cards could be the same, I couldn't get Google Earth to work properly as the graphics drivers were not always available.
I know there are people who can sort these types of things out by using scripts and compiling programs together, but that was out of my league.

664750 2008-05-10 02:35:00 I've tried to follow the port forwarding help at portforward . com . But when I go into ipconfig /all vis a cmd line I get .
"C:WINDOWS\system32\ipconfig . exe is not a valid WIN32 application" Then get access is denied in the cmd box . This happened in the TCPOtimizer program as well when it showed its progress every item was "access denied"
I have another program called Xilisoft DVD Ripper Ultimate that when installing states part of it is not a valid WIN32 application then doesn't install properly and I get buffer overrun errors .

Is there a problem with my XP installation? I did have Ubuntu on this computer as a dual boot which I have recently removed .
What have I done and how can I fix it?

I've just attempted this again and I'm getting the same results in this quote . What can I do, this stopping from setting up a static Ip address

664751 2008-05-16 23:13:00 Not sure if anyone is still watching this thread, thank you to those who have helped me out with this problem.
I have had to do a repair which I stuffed up and had to do a complete recovery install from scratch. So everything is working well now and probably explains other little annoyances that have been occuring with other apps and peripherals.
It appears that the system32 part of the windows was not working properly and this was my problem. I've managed to setup port forwarding which had increased p2p downloads by x10. There is definately a speed difference between ubuntu and windows which could be related to windows being windows.

Cheers Joe
