The truth is that nobody really knows if Telecom is going to voluntarily open its doors wider to competition.

If it does happen, it will be bit by bit, gradually inched by individual cases, that is, unless the Government takes the bull by the horns and introduces anti-monopolistic regulations, and/or split Telecom up maybe into lines and services, like the US government split up AT&T 'Ma Bell' in 1984.

TelstraClear have just announced they are intending to extend their cable network, but have not said by how much or when, but that is at least a good sign.

My own experiences with Telecom these last few weeks indicates that internal departmental knowledge is at sixes and sevenses knowing what agreements they may have or may not have signed with TelstraClear for 'allowing' existing Telecom customers to migrate to Telstra.
I have not been impressed at all with their customer services.

So, I agree with the general concensus, broadband is good, wherever it comes from, and there is not much point in waiting for something spectacular to happen.

Costs will only really come down when greater numbers take up broadband, and maybe NZ gets more cable links.
