380513 2005-08-13 04:02:00 I read somewhere that Bill Gates only knows Assembly and a bit of C, and no longer has anything to do with the inner development of Windows etc, rather marketing/management. Chilling_Silence (9)

What do you mean "no longer"? When did he ever?

380515 2005-08-13 04:29:00 Step 2. Type: "apt-get install whatever" (whatever = what you want to install.) It's most likely that whatever you want can be found this way.

Step 3. Wait and watch for a few minutes (on broadband) If watching screeds of text roll by bores you, then go eat an apple or something. You should have just enough time before step 4.

Every component of what you need will be downloaded and installed.

Step 4. Run your program. It's there for all users, complete with icons in a menu and all those nice touches. No reboots or other frustrations were needed.

How much easier does it need to be?
Hmm. apt-get HalfLife 2.
apt - get GTASA
I think not.

380516 2005-08-13 04:49:00 And the main point - GAMES. And don't bring up all this stuff about Wine and similar cop outs. The average home user will have to be able to walk into a shop, buy anything off the shelf, go home and run the wizardy install. And play it without needing to do anything else.
Until then it remains the O/S for the more technically minded.
Pity.

380517 2005-08-13 05:15:00 I'd almost certainly get into Linux if
a) Windows wasn't so easy
b) Windows wasn't so mainstream
c) I could realise any benefits from it
d) Didn't pose so many potential problems such as gaming compatibility, drivers etc

380518 2005-08-13 05:34:00 I think Greg's quite right :) Chilling_Silence (9)
380519 2005-08-13 11:45:00 Boy Joe you sure know how to pick a fight
first you pick on kiwis (a little, Tell us a clocks are wrong :D )

Then OMG you post this subject.........................................

Both forum mods are linux fans, Better check that flame suite mate.

Its been nice knowing you :D

I agree with chill
If linux compares with win 3.1, then I submit Win 3.1 is long way ahead of itself and the current generation of windows is still trying to catch up.

May the penguin forgive you, as we do

I think not.I take it these are games?????? i dont get into games. I get into my comp for communication, info, and music.

Apparently most games can be run on *nix using wine, but i wouldn't know from experiance, just from reading of the experiances of others.

I fully believe that if one is going to run a comp on the interweb thingy, its better to use a Linux box.

Gaming may be better on a Windows box, i've heard rumours.........

I read your posts thoroughly . You obviously didn't read mine .
One of the main points against Linux is GAMES . You know - those things that drive the hardware industry . No, all those "windows emulators" do not work properly . The average gamer wants to buy any game off the shelf, install and run it without hours of fiddling about . They generally want maximum performance too, and the few games that can be run in Linux do not give that at all .
As I said, until that happens, its doomed to be for the technically minded, Linux fan club only .
Even my friend, who loathes and detests Windows, esp XP, lives with it for that reason .

If you go and quote the message, you should see it looking alright (Its in two columns that look fine in a terminal.) Again these can be installed from Porthole, or here's a screenshot of GuiTOO:

I will conceed that of course not all games are like this. Point2Play makes installation for pretty much every new game released fine. "Gaming" is no longer a valid reason not to have tried linux. IIRC nVidia actually benchmarked their drivers a few years back using Quake3 and put the results on their site in a powerpoint stating how their linux drivers were marginally better. Times may have changed however.

You're definately right thou, there's one or two apps I could do with running... However the code just wont run under Wine. I live without. Part of the sacrifice of having a system that doesnt need defragging, AV, Anti-spyware.... you know what I mean ;)
