664771 2008-10-26 22:56:00 I think unless you really multitask often, a quad core isn't worth the money. Although, I have to say keeping one is an extreme temptation. I bought a Q9550 cheap at $400, but I had to fight temptation and sold it for a $100 profit. :D

Though the 'buyer' hasn't made any contact....:(

664772 2008-10-27 05:11:00 I know that XP Home supports 1x CPU & XP Pro supports 2x CPU's, does this affect multi-core CPU's thou?
Im not saying it *does*, Im just asking, I dont know...

664773 2008-10-27 05:56:00 According to tomshardware (www.tomshardware.com)

Home supports multi-core. But not multi socket

Altho you may need this (support.microsoft.com)

If youre still using XP SP2

664775 2008-10-28 22:55:00 Even video encoding may not necessarily benefit from more than 2 cores, as it depends on the program and type of encoding you are doing. I was encoding video (converting video stream from 1 format to another and converting audio stream to mp3) on a dual core machine and it use 100% of 1 core and only 25% of the other. utopian201 (6245)

664777 2008-10-29 00:02:00 I have found that with win xp pro and SP 2 all programs will use all four cores, regardless of whether they are designed to do so or not..

I use MS Flight Simulator X, a program not designed for four cores. I have it set to use three cores and I have XP and others on a single core.

FSX uses it's first core at 100% continuuously and the other two cores fluctuate between 40 and 100%.

I have also found that if I run FSX on four cores it uses 100% of core 0. If windows suddenly needs more resources, it will not use any other core. It just creates a massive lockup
