664505 2008-04-30 23:28:00 Hey, i am going to finally build/buy my media pc, i want to hook it up to my tv and run my sky through. What sort of specs will i need to do this?

I already have a tv tuner lined up (thanks Trev:rolleyes:) www.ascent.co.nz

Im not the richest guy in the world (like alto of people atm), so i cant have anything flashy...

I would like to watch tv through it, (not HD or anything) and record to dvd or HD for later use... :banana...

I am looking at something like this if i cant get one with a flashy GC... www.trademe.co.nz

Any comments welcome.

664506 2008-04-30 23:39:00 Do you mean just a PC with a tuner so you can record to hdd or DVD.

If you mean with Windows Media centre, I dont think that tuner works with Windows media centre.

But it'll work fine in Windows XP Home/Pro, if youre going to use one of these

All you need is the tuner and the PVR2 program (www.leadtek.com)

Thats if this program works, it should.

This will record channels, from the tuner to the hdd (all you have to do, is go into the program's config, and configure it, and tune the channels in). And connect an aerial to the tuner of course.

This program will also let you select an external source (so you can record from something like a video). Thats if you connect it properly

Only thing with the program, is you cant use the FM option, since the tuner doesnt have an FM tuner

You dont need that cable from trademe, the program lets you watch it on the monitor you're using (if this is what you want to watch it on)

To play or record Sky?
You can only play or record the channel your sky decoder is currently on, you can not see or record a second or other channel as Sky is encrypted.

You should get the required cables with the card.

A DVB-T card can pick up signals from a UHF Aerial
A DVB-S card can pick up signals from a Sky Satellite dish.
Also some cards connect with composite cables and/or S-Video to your Sky box or TV/VHS/DVD Out and pick up a signal from that.

1st, thats fine, my video recoreder is starting to wear out... So i thought why not do this instead of getting a dvd recorder?

2nd, Is this card a DVB-T or DVS-S or both? I dont know where to look :D

I was thinking of that cable for running from my pc to my tv, so i can change vga output to AV input so it will show on tv.

664510 2008-04-30 23:54:00 It looks like that cable is for the VGA connection to TV, but then if you get this cable, you'll have to use the TV (you cant connect it to your monitor as well).

Since its only got 1 VGA connection on it.

The only way to get it on your monitor and TV, is if your videocard has got a video out (s-video or RCA connection on it).

You connect the monitor to the videocard, and the TV to video out on the videocard (if its got one), you may need an s-video / RCA adapter

Then you have to configure the videocard drivers, so you'll get a signal on the TV.

664514 2008-05-01 00:25:00 That TV card you linked to looks like it is only a software MPEG2 card that will only pick up standard analogue TV channels via VHF/UHF aerial.
Or it will take the connection from your Sky decoder.

It won't pick up Freeview via the satellite (DVB-S) and no point getting a TV card that does DVB-T yet as it is not available in Whangarei.
