666116 2008-05-05 06:16:00 Greetings all,

So setting up an Asterisk server, trying to figure out just exactly how much of my bandwidth is going to be sucked up by VoIP, and how much is just the rest of the family sitting on YouTube etc.

So, from what I understand, µ-law is 64kbps (8KB/s, yes?), and this is just one-direction, correct?

So two people talking uses approx 16KB/s, right?
16KB/s x 60 seconds (in a minute) x 60 minutes in an hour / 1024KB in a MB = 56.25MB for an hours worth of voice? Is this roughly correct? Do I also need to factor in network overheads etc?

So if the family spent 23 hours on the phone last month on local calls alone, that's roughly 1.3GB? Is that really all??

Thoughts / comments appreciated

Cheers

Chill.

666117 2008-05-05 06:53:00 Chuck on a little more - realistically it's around 84kbits/sec in each direction, including all overheads. If you opt for g.729 instead (this costs though) it'll drop down to ~22kbits/sec in each direction. Erayd (23)
666118 2008-05-05 07:18:00 Hi Joe,

Try this:

www.voip-info.org

I've found it accurate to real world conditions. My work's PBX is asterisk based so I can give you more info on our bandwidth usage just let me know what you want to know.

666119 2008-05-05 11:25:00 Looks like g729 might be worth going for in that case :)

My calculations for working out the amount of data-transfer its going to use monthly though is pretty much on the mark though right? If I correct it from 64 to 84...?

666121 2008-05-05 20:58:00 Ive found this, it gave me the theory numbers:
www.erlang.com

Now to just ensure Im accurately guessing the monthly amount of bandwidth used and we should be all gravy :)
