666132 2008-05-05 05:17:00 This computer is a year old and im looking buying it:

intel pentium 4 processor 519K -
3.06GHz, 1 MB L2 cache, EM64T, Execute Disable Bit, 533MHz FSB

512 MB - 400MHz DDR SDRAM memory

160GB - 7200RPM serial ATA hard drive

nVIDEO Ge Force 6200 - 3D PCI Express Graphics with TV out port and DVI capabilities, and Turbo Cache supporting up to 256 MB memory

Lightscribe Double Layer - 16x DVD+- RW/+-R Drive

Is this a good deal, i would upgrade the ram to about 2gb. I could buy it for $340 for just this as i have a screen and everything else also i have a os.

Is this a good deal?

666133 2008-05-05 05:25:00 Sounds ok to me, just make sure you see it working, before you buy it Speedy Gonzales (78)
666134 2008-05-05 05:37:00 P4 CPU, mixed with 400Mhz ram. I guess its ok for web browsing and email, but that's about it. Its an ok deal, if a little expensive. There are new ones for $500 and have better components, an old pc could be damaged in some way. SPARTAN 860 (2618)

666136 2008-05-05 06:10:00 Firstly I doubt that computer is 1 year old, P4 has not been manufactured for several years (maybe old stock when sold)

Its not great value as mentioned above.

Quick example, this Core 2 Duo "type" 2.0gig architecture will easily outperform that old p4 3gig in most situations even running only single thread apps, and being a dual core any multi threaded apps even better of course.

Example (ish $$)
$68.00 CORSAIR TWIN2X2048-6400 2x1GB DDR2 800MHZ CL5
$112.00 XFX MG-630I-7109 nForce 630i MCP/GeForce 7100i INTEL LGA775
$103.00 Intel Pentium E2180, 2.0GHz (OC up to 3.2GHz)
$75.00 Asus ATX Case w/ 350w PSU
$41.00 Pioneer DVR-212 Dual Layer Serial-ATA DVD Writer review
$74.00 Seagate Barracuda 250GB 7200 8MB NCQ 3.5" SATAII
= $473.00 Total inc gst, ex shipping

Of course you would have a warranty being new, and already have 2 gig with a larger hard drive.

Nothing wrong with P4's and DDR400 ram.

Ive got 2 here with DDR 400. Both can do what any other computer can do

Yea but is a poor deal for $340 , when you can buy a faster new rig with double the ram, larger hard drive and warranty for around $480 (parts only of course) . Hardware is cheaper than it has ever been, buyer beware .

666140 2008-05-05 07:50:00 Well lets see from C1 Shopping Mall (cant be bothered with pricespy for individual part prices)
$359 including Delivery & GST gets you the following:
ATHLON64 X2 4600+ 2.4GHZ WINDSOR ($97.65)
Western Digital CAVIAR SE 160GB HDD ($69.45) spend $1 more for a seagate
Transcend JETRAM DDR2 2GB PC2-5300 ($57.15)
ASUS M2A-VM Motherboard ($94.75)
Liteon DH-20A3S DVD Writer ($40.15)

The motherboard has an integrated ATI graphics with DVI output so there u go almost as good as the turbocache Ge Force 6200.

Or if your happy to spend a little more, you could swap the M2A-VM for a M2N-MX SE PLUS mobo save $18 then for $48 (or $30 difference) you can get a ASUS EN7200GS/HTD/256M (dedicated ram, passive cooled).

All of the above could be made slightly cheaper by looking around pricespy e.g. the hdd price is easy to beat.
