| 666122 | 2008-05-05 05:14:00 | I've got a HP Pocket Media 120Gb USB HDD, and I was wondering if it was possible to boot an O/S (preferably XP) from this to help with cleaning virus's/spyware etc of a PC's system disk. Kind of like slaving the infected HDD in another PC, but without having to pull the drive. I'm guessing this would hinge first and foremost on whether the PC's BIOS supports booting from a USB device?? TIA :) |

| 666123 | 2008-05-05 06:02:00 | Pretty much depends on the PCs ability to boot from a USB HDD Why not look into something like Barts PE or whatever so you can boot XP from a CD rather than a USB HDD. Much more PCs support booting from CD :) |

| 666124 | 2008-05-05 08:06:00 | I agree with chilling, I have made a Bart PE boot CD (basically a slimmed down bootable live XP) - but you can attach a external drive to work with Bart PE once it starts up; For mine, I had my XP image backup using the free XML DriveImage (requires USB plugin and XML DriveImage plugin for Bart PE). You can add various tool, application, and driver plugins, including for anti-virus; I think I added plugins to the external drive. Though might require a bit of a trial, because I recall some plugins (about 3-4 years back) did not seem to work properly, but may have improved since... Bart's PE Builder (www.nu2.nu)... |

All that work...and I know you are going to hate me and compare me to that Winmac guy...but I just can't help myself !!! You can do this easy as pie on a MAC ! No mucking about..just clone your drive onto an external, change the boot target and away you go. I have 2 copies on externals which I use for different functions ...no serial numbers needed, no special permissions from Redmond....it just works ! Sorry Sorry:D |
