665668 2008-05-04 01:40:00 I recently replaced my heatsink and fan cos it would reguarly stop spinning on boot up and I thought it was problem solved as no problems for a few months.

Now its the same deal: turn on computer fan starts, wait 20 seconds and as windows is loading the cpu fan just stops. Sometimes it stops and alarms for a couple of seconds then starts up again. Its weird.

This occurs maybe 50% of the time now, is it simply a case of need a new fan again?

665669 2008-05-04 01:51:00 By "alarm for a couple of seconds" do you mean it starts beeping?

It is normal for PWM type fans to only start up at a certain temperature. But beeping or alarms is not good. Have you tried another FAN header?

665670 2008-05-04 01:55:00 Could be smart fan control- You didn't mention what board you have, but on Gigabyte you keep hitting the del key on start up, go into the BIOS settings / PC health Status / CPU Smart Fan Control /select Disable.

If it is Smart Fan control, the fan stops spinning until the CPU gets hot enough to kick the fan into action, and stops / slows down when it gets cool enough.

665671 2008-05-04 03:06:00 These days (during the cold days) my CPU fan doesn't usually start till I am well into Windows, the CPU is just not hot enough and this is an overclocked Athlon X2 4400+ CPU with extra Voltage on the stock cooler :punk

This could be what is happening except the part about the alarms does not support this. Unless the alarm sounds when the CPU fan is not running ignoring the actual temp of the CPU.

665672 2008-05-05 06:52:00 Yeah i have my gigabyte mb set to alarm at 60 degrees i think it is, in anycase it alarms (constant awful buzz) as soon as the fan stops.

But yeah, perhaps its not hot enough for the fan to start, so thats why it doesn't, nice one. I shall investigate further.

Will i be running to much of a rick by next time it alarms instead of turning it off right away, running a game to heat it up and see if the fan kicks in?

665673 2008-05-05 08:49:00 This looks like the situation I encountered when I first powered up my Gigabyte GA-P35C-DS3R: the CPU fan gave a kick, then stopped and the 'Fan not running' alarm went off. It scared the sh*t out of me the first time!

After a couple of secs the fan started spinning and the alarm stopped. I figured it was the smart fan control operating with a cold CPU, and the easiest solution was to switch the alarm off. That was last February, and the system has run without problem ever since.

(What's that burning smell....?)

665674 2008-05-06 21:09:00 Yeah, I figure thats whats happening with mine. I left it running for a while and then the fan kicked in, I'll have a look when I get home to disable that alarm.

Thanks guys.
