665647 2008-05-04 00:08:00 My liteon dvd has begun making this funny funny noise, when you close the tray witha disc it makes this noise like those toy cars do......you know the ones u pull backwards and it makes the clicking noise? it makes that sound. Yet there is no errors in event manager, it reads cd/dvds, and burns perfect. It also makes this noise when i boot the pc, any ideas what it is? It does happen when a disc is in the drive. aidanmaz (7180)
665648 2008-05-04 00:25:00 Sounds (no pun intended) that its got gearing problems.

You could try blowing it out in case theres some crap in there, other wise could be time for a new one. They are cheap enough these days.

Has the drive ever had a CD/DVD shatter in it ?

665649 2008-05-04 00:39:00 yes it had a windows 2003 server enterprise disk shatter in it bout 3 months ago. I know they are cheap to replace but i dont see the point if its fixable. aidanmaz (7180)
665650 2008-05-04 01:29:00 When the disc shattered it could have damaged the drive gears, tiny pieces of disc would have been left in the drive unless the drive was completely dis-assembled/stripped and cleaned out, and over time they act like grinding paste, slowly cutting away at the gears .

Sooner or later they simply get worn out / sloppy .

You might be able to get new gears from someplace but apart from taking the Drive apart and giving it a good blow / clean out theres not much more you can do .

Finding gears may be a time consuming job, add in the cost/ time to get them - especially when you look at places like Price Spy ( . pricespy . co . nz/search . php?br=LiteOn_86" target="_blank">www . pricespy . co . nz), and places have Liteon Drives for around the $40 area, I'd just get another drive .

problem found and solved

seriously, running a drive full of plastic shards sounds like a good way to damage the drive and damage the disc you next put in there

next time mentioning the shattered disc might help:thumbs: (and drive brand/model incase it's a known problem)
