381814 2005-08-17 09:09:00 Hey.
I'm off to Uni next year, and i'm just trying to plan everything now.
One thing i need (want) to sort out is internet...

I'm going to Waikato Uni, and i'll stay in a hostel.
I'm going to have a Laptop, and i thought it'd be good to get wireless internet so i can surf anywhere.

But does anyone know if the Uni provides internet access in the hostels?
I know you can get phone lines - but i assume you'll have to pay all connection/line fees (it says user pays fees).
Or do they have a WAN running throughout teh campus? and if so - will taht have internet sharing?

If not - whats my best option?
I no there are a ton of computer rooms with net access, but i was wanting my own acesss.

I was thinking of something like Woosh - but thats not available in Hamilton

381817 2005-08-17 09:55:00 According to the Waikato webpages: Halls of residence don't provide private access to their WAN. You would have to check with individual Halls what internet access they do provide.

Universities pay quite a bit for their bandwidth and they aren't in the business of being ISPs.

381818 2005-08-17 10:52:00 Hey.
Thanks.
I've sent them a few emails - but i just get sent info booklets which don't really answer much.
There is an info session with them in a month or 2, so i'll ask then.
i just thought i'd see if anyone no's anything now.

Another Q then.
What broadband options are available in Hamiltion?

381819 2005-08-18 12:03:00 I suggest you contact the hostel directly.
In my exp not waikato, pay for phone line and for dialup ISP charge or if they have LAN socket, the computer fee is paid on your fees so you pay for the socket per month which is quite cheap.

Never heard of WLAN thou, ask the hostel...
I say prob not for a hostel, they just don't have the equipment and they would need to install WLAN hotspots via the many floors many wings of the building....

My hostel don't have landline connection.I have to pay $40 a month plus my father's pay for the connection for internet.

Hostel is unlikely to have wan however when I visited my friend's hostel up in auckland there was a wan setup in the lounge down stairs where everyone can connect using their laptop by sitting in he lounge for free.

You can also get adsl at your hostel. My friend is using jetstart at the moment.

381822 2005-08-18 12:32:00 I remember when Waikato was the entry for internet into the North Island and us grads got it for free! (at the time I think it was about $15 per hour in the real world) Mind you the best place to hang out then was the usenet...... netchicken (4843)
