Not half as stubborn as our tweak'e though. ;)

381090 2006-02-10 20:54:00 Meh, Its just an external firewall with an override button.

Redundant, extra cost, and a pain in the arse....no matter how much dribble is thrown at it. It doesn't take the place of reguler security, but doesn't do squat if the usual security devices are in place.

Basic software firewall and a quality router.Job done.No extra expense, no press a button bullcrapola.

381091 2006-02-10 22:52:00 Have you seen a continual attack on a software firewall like DOS (Denial of Service attack)?
And how many home PC users ever suffer from this?

Instead of configuring options and rules like a typical firewall; with the Stingray Firewall you push the "Bypass" button and the firewalling will be disabled.
Oh great. Then you effectively have no firewall running. Stupid.
I've set many people up with ZA and only two people have had any trouble and that is because they were plain stupid and nothing can cure that.

381093 2006-02-11 06:48:00 julie ...you still havn't tested your setup have you?

I thought that I would go against the grain and hold a compromise but Tweak'e, what world are you living in?not the inverted universe you are in :p

Your claim that 95% of threats was probably true 5 years ago but that is not the case today. 70-80% of Internet threats are external through un-authorized connection attempts, designer Internet viruses (such as sasser, msblaster, etc.), etc.bollocks, what a load of ****. 5 years ago virus where the biggest threat, worms where not comman. these days, while worms are comman, the single biggest threat is malware. malware is THE leading cause of pc repairs. malware is bigger than worms, virus's and hardware failure put together. plenty of shops have reported that 90%+ of repairs are due to malware.

ICSA and other certified bodies that monitor and provide signatures to prevent viruses are quite proficient in what they do. In fact, a signature is now normally available within hours of conception. Therefore, with a good AV and AS in place, the odds of becoming infected is quite small. Even if that happens, scan on a regular basis and the odds becomes smaller. Hence, internal threat can be contained with a good AV and AS in place.again bollocks. there is allmost always someone being infected before AV companies even know about it. 2ndly its well known for AV companies to not release the sigs for a period of time. a perfect example is norton who may release the sig stright away but only in the manual update. it may not be released to the autoupdate untill the normall weekly update. so the infection can easly get a week running around on your pc

A software firewall is only as good as the user. Therefore, it is only a matter of time until you are fooled and an illegitimate request, infection and/or takeover occurs. Off we go to the tech $$$.the firewall is only as god as the user. however most know that XXXporn.exe is not good. the infection is going to occur with or without a firewall, only difference is without a software firewall you won't know about it.

Most trojans are of a dormant quality. They try to leave a backdoor open and wait for wakeup from the source. Again, running your scans on a regular basis removes these threats. Having a device that prevent un-authorized connections prevent any wakeup opportunties.again bolocks.... trojens can do what ever they are set to do. steal your passwords, remote control, download more malware. it MAY be a dormant all depending on what its set to do. if it can access out then the external firewall will let it in

A software firewall resides and relies on the os, that it resides on, to be its eyes and ears. Therefore, if the os is corrupted what happens to the program that relies on it?again more bull logic, if the OS is corupt the whole pc grinds to a halt. softwarefrewalls can easly stop the infections that hook into the tcp/ip. if tcp/ip gets damaged the whole net access gets cut off.

If you have the ability to turn off your software firewall, so does everyone and everything else including an infection.correct, except that problem was found and fixed years ago, most firewalls check if any program is controling the pc inputs. the worse they can do is shut it down, which is a dead giveaway that the pc is infected.

I am sorry but I do not wish to rely on something that will impede my computers performance, rely on the consumers technical knowledge, and becomes so intimately associated with the operating system that one infection or event can cripple my computer. I will live with my external Stingray, maintain proper computer hygene through regular scans and always make sure that the signatures are up-to-date. This is much easier to do and more cost effective then the risks associated with what you are proposing.so you are quite happy to have an infected pc as long as you can still do your online stuff. typical, your quite happy running around on the net infecting others, being used for mallious acts and you don't care cause you can still surf. wait till you get your credit card and bank acc cleanout

By the way, most modems do not come with a built-in firewall. ;) pass, i don't have adsl (not adviallable), all the ethernaet external adsl modems i have used have built in firewalls and nat. granted cheap models may not have.

you want to test your system? go do what a few ISP's do, go install VNC (as a service) with no paswords, auto accept etc (turn off all sicurity optoins in vnc) and post your ip addy :D
lets see how long your pc lasts because no AV or AS will stop it. in case your wondering ,THIS IS TRUE, certain ISP's do exactly that and leave it running ! !

another example, a certina IT pro i did a small job for, actualy had a software firewall (dailup) BUT the bright spark turned off the application control. the fully upto date AV (NOD32 i think) completely missed the backdoor running on his pc (kiss good by to company source code).

and here i thought this thread had finished, round 2 ??

381094 2006-02-11 06:59:00 Now if Stingray would supply us with some of these devices on a try before buy, or sale or return basis, I wouldn't mind trying one to see how the claims stack up :) Terry Porritt (14)
