I agree, even if it is misguided.

381392 2005-09-06 21:38:00 . . . we [are] already getting 1 in a 100 year floods every year or so somewhere in the country, so we should not be surprised by increasingly extreme weather events . I agree, there are more than 100 rivers in NZ, so there *should* be a hundred year flood pretty much every year . . simple maths .

Of course our "big one" is lake taupo erupting again . that would level most of the north island . It is a couple of hundred years overdue to go too .

381393 2005-09-07 08:11:00 And we will have more 60-year old grannies getting taxpayer-funded sex-change operations and other similarly based policies.

The sixty year old (actually she was 73 years old !) has not had the operation !!
Inflammatory statements which are not correct !! Surprised at you KiwiTT !!!!

:) I like that, yet something niggles, the reasoning isn't quite right, maybe we dont have 100 distinctly separate and independent weather zones :)

Perhaps I should have said the country appears to be experiencing 1 in a 100 year severe weather occurrences every few years .

Now for something completely different, is this the evil face of capitalism?

381398 2005-09-08 21:32:00 I just heard National's plans for education. They are ridiculous. Instead of getting all the schools up to scratch, they are going to give out private tuition (kip mcgrath) vouchers to students that require help. Even if it starts out alright, they will make it harder & harder to qualify for help & everyone that can't afford non-subsidised private tuition will be royally screwed.

To make matters worse, National want to get rid of enrollment schemes & have all the schools wasting resources on battling each other for students. This will have the effect of killing off perfectly good schools in the less desireable parts of town, while the popular schools will be over-crowded & inefficient

381399 2005-09-08 21:50:00 This came via email . Now, I really don't want to vote Labour, Helen, political correctness, the Treaty . . . NZ needs a change .
But have a look below, and tell me whats wrong with these views .
Rip it up if you can . Thanks .

Why I am voting Labour?

It's an interesting question . . . Contrary to some I am no party hack, I hold no office in the party . I have been to the National website, I know they want to give 1500 dollars next year rising to 2000 the year after that . So why am I turning down 1500 dollars next year? Why would I vote against my immediate self interest? Here is why . . .

I am voting Labour because I don't believe that New Zealand can afford nearly 10 billion dollars worth of cuts, I think that some people should have tax relief and those people should be the ones that need it most . I believe that a family with 3 kids paying the same amount of tax as me is wrong . I believe that where people "choose" to have kids then we should support them . They are doing us a favour . Providing the next generation of kiwis is a thankless job, it shouldn't be .

I am voting Labour because it's not all about me, I'm not gay, I'm not Female, I'm not Maori but I believe that everyone deserves a fair go . I believe that some of the most loving families around are gay relationships; I believe that woman should earn the same as men for the same work; I believe that Maori have a special place in this land . Whenever we invite the world to look at us we show them our Maori culture proudly . When our young people are overseas it's the Haka and the Waiata that makes them dream of home . We should be looking out for one another, looking after your self is not enough . If there is anything that makes us human it should be our ability to put self interest to one side for the greater good .

I am voting Labour because we have never had it so good . We have the lowest unemployment rate in the world, we have growth rates higher than the US or Australia, our taxation rates are low compared to the rest of the world . We have had huge economic shocks since 1999 like September 11 and the Asian Economic Crisis . This Government has guided the economy through all of this . Unlike some I don't put this down to dumb luck . It's ironic that this government might be voted out of office because the economy is doing so well people expect even more .

I am voting Labour because they won't revisit the Nuclear Free Issue . This iconic line in the sand drawn by our nation is something that defines us . It makes us who we are . Because of this policy we are the only western nation to be the subject of a terrorist attack by another western nation since world war two . . Because of our principled stand we were shooed into the corner by the United States . But our head while bloodied was not bowed . It was the United States that came to us to resume military exercises . What we stand for is right . What we stand for is just . What we stand for is not negotiable and it never should be .

I am voting Labour because I trust them . I am sure that Labour would love to promise across the board tax cuts, improved education, health and roads and defence while running a surplus . . . But you can't promise to cut nearly 4 billion dollars off public spending while promising to improve public services and be credible . We can't have tax cuts and better services it's a lie and I won't buy it .

I am voting Labour for all of these reasons and more . I am voting for them because they want to create a New Zealand that I want to live in . A country where everyone gets a fair go, where there is no discrimination, where people look out for each other and which does not back down from its values .

381400 2005-09-08 23:07:00 The worlds population has reached a level where to ensure survival of the planet (note I said planet, not the human race), governments everywhere have got to become brutal as regards propagation.

The right to choose how many children a couple will have will have to go. Infertility treatment will have to go.

All countries should adopt the Chinese one child policy.

The Catholic Church will have to re-write its doctrines.

So, even though I support the concepts of mutual support and social responsibility, the idea of the state paying for and encouraging ever larger numbers being born is anathema to me.
