665608 2008-05-04 02:38:00 Hmmm Sounds like the flash drive was acting as the main drive.

Load the Linux live CD, see if it will detect any data, or anything on the Actual hard Drive (make sure the Flash drive is removed) IF it does locate anything look for the i386 folder. and /or any of your data. i386 will be on the main section of the drive, normally C:\I386

IF you can reload the recovery console you may like to try bootcfg /rebuild

665609 2008-05-04 04:04:00 I think its well and truly a dead duck.
Recovery console doesn't see a drive at all.
Time to go shopping I think.
Thanks for your help anyway.

665610 2008-05-04 04:18:00 Did you try running the Acer recovery CD's without the flash drive attached ? wainuitech (129)
665611 2008-05-04 04:30:00 Is the HDD detected in the BIOS?

Do you know what brand the HDD is? To run the manufacturers test on it

665613 2008-05-04 05:06:00 If you rerun the Acer recovery CDs it should wipe the complete drive, reset the partitions and reinstall the OS back to how it was when you first purchased the laptop wainuitech (129)
665614 2008-05-04 05:08:00 I'd pull the drive out and install it on another system, I'm in the same town as you Bones and i've got a laptop to IDE converter on the floor here somewhere and a few drives tools if you want to try reformatting the drive that way? EX-WESTY (221)

Acer drive utility cant find a drive. Acer Recovery CDs cant reinstall to factory settings. Ranesh? Partition manager cant even start.
Active Disk Partition Manager finds "Drive not initialised" but fails to initialise it.
I've ordered a new(bigger) drive but would be interesting to see if Ex-westy
can raise it from the dead.

I just get "Failed to scan drive.......run checkdisk...."
which leads to "The specified drive is not valid........"
The system seems to know theres a drive there but can't access it.
Thanks anyway, I'm admitting defeat. Will wait to see how ex-westy gets on.
