381856 2006-02-21 07:54:00 YER how does it leave out the ads can all models do this technophobia (8565)
381857 2006-02-21 09:42:00 Knowazark hasn't been heard of since August, guys (and was unknown before this thread).

But there are others on the forum -as well as EX-WESTY - with HD models.

I have to admit my new Philips DVDR520H is still in the box, so I can't help.

I'm interested in the answer, but am assuming ads have to be edited out manually. A box that does it for you sounds too good to be true...

381858 2006-02-21 10:01:00 Why is your recorder still in the box it makes it very difficult to use in their i understand try taking it out of the box to avoid overheating. technophobia (8565)
381859 2006-02-21 10:16:00 Haha

To get it going needs 2 things:

(1) A space to put it alongside/below/above/somehow near the TV.

(2) Some quiet uninterrupted time to work out the connections & plug the right bits into the correct holes.

I'm one of the organisers of a school reunion which is finally happening this weekend. Until it's over I have no life.
Then - after a cup of tea & a liedown, I'll take it out of the box, clear a space & tell the world to go away.
(And maybe make Help posts here)

381860 2006-02-21 10:23:00 If you lived in chch id be more than happy to help you set it up, in the mean time just put it on the floor and connect the colored leads to the same colored leads to the tv thats the easiest way to explain it without confusing you sorry i cant do much more. technophobia (8565)
381861 2006-02-21 10:41:00 Thanks for the offer, techno.

I guess I'll cope. The tuning may be more of a mission than the connections, actually.

Space on the floor ?
In your dreams..
That gets filled up first. Isn't that why we have remotes?

Yes, ads have to be edited out manually. I have a Sony RDRHX910 which uses a system call "Intelligent Scene Chaptering". What this does (is supposed to do) is sense the beginning and end of ad breaks and insert a chapter mark at those points. Then when you are viewing, as soon as you reach an ad break, you press Chapter forward and, voila, you are back to the program. In reality, it works about 50% of the time. I have it turned on, but switch on the on-screen display when I jump the ads to check that it only skips forward 4-5 mins. If it misses a transition, you end up skipping past a whole section of program.

All in all, it's easier than fast forwarding through the ads, but can be infuriating if it gets it wrong.

381863 2006-02-22 05:26:00 I edit the adverts out manually after "taping" if it's something I wish to burn to disk and keep. To fast forward thru the adverts whilst watching takes about 15 seconds to blow thru the obligitory 4 mins of ads or so, and maybe just a few seconds backup to find the start of the program again.
Chaptering on the Panasonic is done when it's burned to a disk, it then puts in chapters every five mins or so. You can add them to a stored program on the hard drive at any point and thats fine whilst it's still on the drive, burn it and you go to the default 5 mins. In that regard if I want chapters at a specific point then I split the program before burning to a DVD.

Laura, I'd love a holiday in Dunedin, can't recall that I've ever been there so the Cadbury factory might be on the list as well, care to buy me an air ticket and i'll install and train you on the DVD recorder. :p
