| 381302 | 2005-08-26 02:39:00 | :) There are heaps of ways a surplus could be allocatde to help everyone and build a better society rather than just leave it in peoples pockets. That is true, but the biggest problem is how the government uses it. I believe that if the government needs more money to run the country we should pay more tax and if they need less we should pay less. At this stage they are earning more than they need and are using it in ways which I do not agree with. Sure they have a surplus, but I don't want my contribution to that surplus to be used to fund hip-hop studies in the US, inefficient tertiary education systems or other people's Sky TV. Taxes should be used for roads, schools, universities, health care (which I might add, while they have a surplus, they can't pluck doctors etc out of thin air) etc. If there is any left over, it should go back to those who paid them. In saying that, after watching Don Brash get torn a new ring-piece in lasts nites debate it's not looking hopeful that this will change. I think he did very well considering Helen Clark's blatant rudeness. At least he remained well mannered, which is more than I can say for his opponent. |

| 381303 | 2005-08-26 09:25:00 | I have been scanning this thread - all 14 pages - so I have not picked up everything, or most things I would have done if had followed on a continuing basis. Seems though that there has been little or no comment on our level of debt. Most of the Western world in in big debt, particularly the USA and NZ. And throughout Europe, USA , Aussie & NZ there has been massive investment in housing. So much so, that it is the biggest financial bubble there has been in history. It may stagger on for years or collapse tomorrow. The most thrifty will weather best. Overexposure is the worst. What has this to do with who to vote for, because now there is not a big difference. We rattled Cullen, who had the best outcome for us, so much that he was pushed by the rest of the cabinet into offering more in the lolly scamble. That is the feedback we give politicians !! -- Whatever we vote is not going to make a big difference now. However, for what it's worth I will vote Labour, because it cares more for people, is more inclusive, than the hidden agendas of the what's in it for me, and Americanisation of National and Act. Let's at least try to stand on our own feet. We have heaps going for us (.................apart from mounds of debt !!!!!!). Misty :D |

| 381305 | 2005-08-26 12:03:00 | "People with jobs that get "tax relief" don't cost you money, they just give you less." The same as people who work for the Govt don't pay tax they pay back tax payers money. |
