665775 2008-05-04 10:18:00 does anyone have or had a web server. i have a home webserver hosting a rather basic site but its better than some so called hosting sites as they either had too many restrictions or not enough space for my liking so i just made my own:D. ok the bandwidth sucks (home DSL which is in a semi rural/out of zone for decent speeds:() but at least at home i get 100Mbps LAN direct to the server.
some specs
533Mhz intel celeron
1024Mb ram
4 gig boot 40 gig web storage
WAMP server package for apache, mysql, php
filezilla FTP server (port 21 ftp)
TightVNC for remote admin
running windows 2000 SP4 (fully patched):D
ok windows isnt the obvious choice for a server, might have a shot at a linux server later.:nerd:

665777 2008-05-04 10:41:00 was just wondering who had them and what kind of config they had williamF (115)
665778 2008-05-04 11:03:00 Mine: debian linux (some on etch, some on lenny)
apache2 or lighttpd
usually mysql, occasionally postgresql
mainly php, some perl, occasionally python

Some servers are dedicated, some are VPS. Ram & CPU vary, nothing under 384mb/1.6GHz P4. Some are dedicated to serving websites, some do other things too. I also admin other systems which aren't soley mine; these vary more widely in specs.

Note that I don't serve public sites from my home dsl line - anything public goes on a datacentre connection, dsl is too slow and not reliable enough.

665779 2008-05-04 11:07:00 My primary server is not really a web server, but a VPS Server, so its kind of a webserver. It's on a datacenter connection in Vancouver, Canada.

Specs are here: mars.codev.co.nz
It actually has 2GB of memory, but the memory you don't see is reserved for the VPSs

I have a few VPSs on it, for web/mail etc etc

Like Bletch, i wouldn't host anything on home DSL, i tried for a while, but it proved pointless.

665780 2008-05-04 11:12:00 lol my server is a bit on the slow side then but has plenty ram. mines just low traffic eg not many hits per day but i use it as a general use server for images and linking files etc which is somewhat handy. plus i can lend/give people some space for serving there pages, testing pages etc williamF (115)

recent speed test of my connection. its reasonably reliable, only had a few drop outs one was due to the plugpack falling out and most of the dropouts was the server needing to be reset for updates asside from that i havent had major dropouts etc

665782 2008-05-04 11:33:00 Yikes - those speeds are complete and utter shit! Might I suggest upgrading to a fullspeed upload if you intend on serving anything over that? Or else get something through a hosting provider, or rent a VPS or something. Erayd (23)
665783 2008-05-04 11:35:00 [QUOTE=williamF;670320 mines just low traffic eg not many hits per day[/QUOTE]

Mine gets 30GB through it on a good day :p

But thats.. 7 people using it at once.

665784 2008-05-04 11:38:00 i know the speeds sux. i would use an external server elsewhere with decent speeds but im a tight ass and hence the home server will do until i move closer to an area with faster connection or can afford external server etc williamF (115)
