665805 2008-05-04 07:35:00  Over the last week I have been having problems sending emails . I thought it was just a problem with sending an email to one particular address . I was getting mail delivery system failure emails 2 to 3 days after sending each email . The messages say that the message to "email address" was undeliverable . The reason for the problem 5 . 4 . 7 . Deliver expired (message too old) Time out .

Then I thought it was because I had attachments and pictures that were too big so I stripped out everything except the text . Same delivery error happened again .

But today I got another delivery failure notice for a different address . :badpc:

I tried sending an email to my own ihug address and it worked fine, I received it straight away . Also I have emails set up with my Lunar pages webhost so I tested sending and recieving emails through my Lunarpages host . . . no problems there . I then tried sending from my ihug address to my Lunarpages address and it worked ok .

Anyway, I phoned ihug to see if there was a problem there . I was told that a lot of people are having problems sending emails, but no problems receiving them . I was then told it was a problem with MY antivirus software and that I should turn it off so that I can send emails!!!!! I told her that this was ridiculous, how could it be my antivurus software if lots of other people were having the same problem and using all sorts of different software . She told me that if I didn't turn my antivirus software off then she couldn't log a fault!!
Then she said that they are aware that there is a problem with ihug emails but only sending to free email addresses such as hotmail or yahoomail . The emails I have been sending to that have failed are companies in Australia and Germany . Definaltely not free mail accounts .

At this stage I asked to speak to someone else, and was told . . . why, just to be told the same thing . . . at which I replied, yes!!!

The next technician I spoke to told me that I need to turn off not only my antivirus software but my firewall also!!! I asked if other people had done this and he said yes . When I asked if anyone had got back to ihug after doing this he said no!!! But he said if I don't turn my protection off then they have no way of figuring out what the problem is with their email system!!! :badpc: :badpc: (I need an emoticon that smashes ihug, not my PC lol) .

I now have no idea which of my business emails, orders etc have reached the recipients, and no way of finding out apart from very expensive international phone calls .

Sorry for ranting, needed somewhere to vent .

665806 2008-05-04 07:42:00 Welcome to PF1 skiwi,
can't help with the ihug thing but we are with them and having no problems at all we have 3 separate email address's with them, but I don't see that turning off your antivirus and firewall is going to help.

665807 2008-05-04 08:46:00 If you had nortons as a AV that could explain the email problems - a Antivirus can stop mails from working. BUT this is not your case - you have AVG.

Since you can send and receive to your own mail address, and your web site then the email appears to be OK.

Whats interesting:
The emails I have been sending to that have failed are companies in Australia and Germany. Definaltely not free mail accounts. This sounds like either ihug are blocking the companies domain name as possible spam, or some where its being blocked.

You need to find out where the problem lays:

As test what you can try is sending a mail to the companies/people from another Computer (friends/family etc) that doesn't use Ihug, AND see if it goes through - Simply put in the mail you are having problems sending to them and trying to find out why - please respond if you get this mail.

NOW-----

IF it bounces back then its not Ihug- its out side of your control.

If it goes through then you need to get onto another PC/Laptop and send again, this time through Ihug ( But not your own PC) - See what happens, if it goes through the problems on your PC if it doesn't go through you have all the proof that Ihug IS the Problem.

If its Ihugs fault they cant say its not since you have proven it is. Explain what test you did and theres your proof.

Most of the time (and this is from Experience) you have to tell the idiots on some of these help desks where / what the problem is.

Some of them simply "follow the book" - the REAL help tech people while they have to do the standard checks, can actually think out of the square and are able to help you.

665810 2008-05-04 09:18:00 Thanks for your help :)

I did some more testing .

I am having no problems sending and receiving emails from my computer through my American webhost email accounts .

No problem sending and receiving emails using my ihug email to my American webhost accounts (at the moment) .

I will now try sending to the Australian and German companies via my ihug email and my lunarpages email .

Best wishes

665811 2008-05-04 09:43:00 Hi helpless Random,

Yep, my speed sucks big time. I am on dial up connection and when I ran speed test it says I am running at 4 to 8 kbps download and zero upload !!!!!

The speed used to be great years ago, but it is grinding to a halt now. I keep phoning and complaining and all they say is that the speed will always get slow after 8.00 pm as that is when all the kids get on the net!!!! Doesn't explain why it is slow all the time grrrrrrr.

I am waiting to change to Telecom Broadband, I got the wireless kit sent to me only to be phoned up, on the day that the technician was to come out, and told that the cabinet about 1.5 km away from me is full. They said they need to build a new cabinet, but because it is on council land they have to get permission to build another one there and that will take 6 months or more !!!!!!! They have put me on the waiting list incase anyone goes off broadband using that cabinet. Apparently I am second in line. The upside is that they said I should get really good speeds as I am practically ontop of the cabinet, plus the exchange is only 3 km away.
