381845 2005-08-17 09:16:00 Hi there

I'm new to this site. Sorry if this is off topic. I'm just about to set fire to our video recorder (munched 2 tapes so far this week) and am about to go out and splash out on a DVD/HDD recorder. Seems they're about $1K. I gather there's not a lot between the models, but the one burning question for me is this: Can you plug a video in via some L&R audio + 1 video inputs and record off a video onto HDD and then onto DVD?? Just want to know that I can still convert all those VHS tapes to DVD.

Thanks

Adrienne

381846 2005-08-17 09:46:00 Yep sure can

If you want to edit the uploaded footage then get a DVD recorder with a hard drive
PS get the bigest drive you can get for your buck.

381847 2005-08-17 10:14:00 yeah, 160GB seems about the standard now. Anything else I need to look for?? Panasonic, Pioneer seem about the best ones. What about Sony?

Cheers,

Ade

381848 2005-08-17 10:34:00 I've got a Panasonic with the 400Gb drive, firewire, network support etc and very happy with it so far.

The new Panasonics are a little quicker to startup I believe and support other formats as well as the -R and RAM formats which my model does.
I wasn't worried about format as my DVD writer supports RAM and the network support also enabled sending footage between the pc and the DVD recorder.

The Sony looked good at the time but price wise they didn't cut it.

As i said above if you want to do any editing, ad removal, scene deletion, scene moving etc then get a hard drive based model and not just a $500 writer only.

Check that your peripherals can also access it eg Video camera with firewire. or card slots for digital camera cards.
otherwise your down to using the good old auxiallary input.

381849 2005-08-17 20:40:00 Wow, I've not seen any with 400GB HDDs!! How much was it and what model? I don't want to spend too much and was budgeting on $1000. Someone else mentioned in another post not to worry too much about HDD size as you just write to DVD (relatively cheap medium) anything you want to keep.

THanks for your help Ex-Westy.

Just out of interest. Can you upload from the DVD recorder back to the PC??

381851 2005-08-18 08:58:00 The model I purchased was the DMR E500H which was sort of on a run out deal cos of the new models arriving.

None of the new models I have seen to date have been as highly speced as this one. 4 AV inputs, SVHS, SCART, PC card slot, Firewire, and network to name a few.

I paid just over $1700 NZ a few months ago, the original retail was about $3.5k for these.

Yep I can shift files to or from the pc to the DVD recorder, either video, or pictures

If you check for some of my previous posts you'll find answers to other questions that others have enquired about.

I have also managed to get this beastie to record TV with the teletext subtitles superimposed.

381852 2005-08-18 12:10:00 Hi there

I've looked around a bit . . and think i'll buy the 160gb pioneer one . . . . any objections or constructive suggestions?

Ade
PS . . don't have a digital video and don't intend on buying one . Have a digital camera but is a Nikon SLR using CF card which the panasonic don't support . What else? not much else except I prefer the look of the pioneer to the panasonic .

thanks for the help!

381853 2005-08-19 09:35:00 One final post. Purchased a Sony RDRHX710 today. Am totally blown away with it so far and have only had it set up for about 2 hours! Awesome! 160GB HDD, double layering, doesn't record the ads ...what more could you ask for?

Thanks for all your help!

Adrienne

381854 2006-02-21 07:43:00 How does it not record the ads? Or do you mean you have to manually edit them out later? stevesumner (4849)
