667187 2008-05-08 03:25:00 Recently, AVG informed me that AVG Free 7.5 (which I have been successfully using for some time) will not be supported by updates after 31 May, and will be superseded by AVG 8.0. Now I'm confused - doesn't AVG 8 require a subscription? Any light shed on this will be appreciated. colmack (2939)
667188 2008-05-08 03:32:00 Depends which version you get.

The free AVG is probably free, it doesnt do as much as the other 2 versions

Avast Home would be better than AVG Free.

Look on the AVG site

I think they are being a bit sneaky with the popup box that they are displaying when avg7.5 loads, as it appears as though people now must upgrade to the full version 8, which you have to pay for. However if you go to http://free.grisoft.com/ you can download the free version of version 8.

If you are paying for an anti virus program, you are best to go for NOD32. Terrible name I know, but it is probably the best antivirus program with the smallest diskspace and memory usage footprint.

667190 2008-05-08 03:34:00 AVG Free 8 is out now. It's about the same as 7.5. Looks nicer though.

667191 2008-05-08 03:59:00 I downloaded AVG Free 8 today and its just running a scan now. Seems to be taking a lot longer, 1 hour 10 mins at the moment. 7.5 usually took only 40 mins. lakewoodlady (103)

I agree, mine took more than double the time and still come up with nothing.

What is it with these programme writers that must bloat everything? :groan:

667193 2008-05-08 04:30:00 it might be scanning in ways 7.5 didn't. If I remember correctly, AVG 8 includes anti-spyware and anti-rootkit functionality too, so it may be scanning for those at the same time. utopian201 (6245)
667194 2008-05-08 04:37:00 I've just checked a newsgroup and V8 by the looks of it, gives you too many false positives.

And if you use ASUS update, it thinks its a backdoor trojan, and tries to delete it.

Somehow, I dont think it'll be a good idea getting AVG 8.0 !

I think Surferjoe posted something about this in the other forum.
