666293 2008-05-05 23:56:00 I'd like some recommendations!

I'm looking to jump ship from xtra, and there seem to be a lot of options. I'm in Albany, North Shore.

1) Another straight DSL provider, such as Orcon
2) Wireless provider - I think I can receive Compass.net Wireless
3) Naked DSL: I don't really use my landline so much, and have heaps of free minutes on my cellphone anyway.

I have three internet users in the house, and probably get through about 5Gb a month. I'd like a fixed IP address, but it isn't critical. I don't need email, I have my webspace and email with WebDrive.

Who do you use? Who's the best?

666294 2008-05-06 00:01:00 Slingshot seem to be doing pretty good lately. Plus they are pretty cheap (more so if you're a heavy internet user). Also a lot of users are having problems with Xnet and Orcon of late.

NDSL requires FS/FS so you're having to pay $10 more for that upload but Slingshot provides NDSL for $79 with 6GB. Xnet provides NDSL for $69 and you pay as you go.

666295 2008-05-06 00:13:00 I am changing to Vodafone next month. $90 for all National calls anytime & 20gig of Broadband with a faster upload speed (to come shortly) (free Modem etc, will give you a credit if you don't want them).

My telecom bill averages $131 per month & only 5gig a month.

I have tried Slingshot, wouldn't wish them on my worst enemy! Always pass the buck when you complain and charged $2.50 a minute for help!

Orcon had an incurable latency problem which they blamed Telecom for, as there was no latency problem with Xtra it didn't make sense.

666296 2008-05-06 00:47:00 Why are you leaving XTRA? I'm about to jump ship from Xnet. Looks like a big shuffle is starting! linw (53)
666297 2008-05-06 00:52:00 Further to this, I've just bought a house, so need to arrange phone and DSL - is going into a package deal the way to go, or should I stick with Telecom for the phone line, and a separate ISP.

Not quite ready to go NDSL at the moment!

I guess the main driver is cost, I know there are cheaper options that are just as good. I'm also paying $50 a month for a phone line that I don't need.

Aaaaand, so many bad experiences with telecom/xtra in the past, to be honest. On hold for thirty minutes only to get cut off, that sort of thing. Been meaning to move for ages.

666299 2008-05-06 02:45:00 I'd recommend TelstraClear as many other ISPs are having international bandwidth issues.

Snap is good too, and I'm currently with them, but trouble is they also offer an "unlimited" plan with fullspeed during off-peak hours (7pm - 7am). As I'm on the Snap Pro plan, I notice a slight degradation during this period when all the leechers get fullspeed.

666300 2008-05-06 07:40:00 Broadband Telecom spokeswoman Connie Sprague has said that Telecom’s Xtra Wireless service will be passed to Orcon this month.... fnphoto (2434)

666302 2008-05-06 21:20:00 I have used 17 ISP's over the past 10 years.
Generaly speaking there's not a great deal of difference between them speedwise. They all try to give you the best they can.

The big differance lies with their service and "help". Don't be taken in by offers of free modems. They are only free because no one will buy them!

I signed up with Xnet the day after IHUG sold out. They had me switched over within 24 hours at no charge. Orcon told me "within 7 days".

I do not have a single complaint with Xnet. I am on a "pay as you go" plan and average monthly bill is about $53. Download speed is normaly in the 250/300 kbps range and uploads have never dropped below 700.

And I have not seen a virus or spam since I have been with them.

What more could I want?
