2005-08-26 22:02:00 | The price got up to $68 a barrel the other day, but if you go to www.abc.net.au and have a listen, you will see that the days of cheep oil is over. THANKYOU very much America who told China they should modernize, so now every man, woman and his dog is buying a car and pushing up the oil demand. Also if you go to Google and put in price of oil down near the bottom you can subscribe to a "Google Alert for: price of oil" I did and got 3 Emails this morning, I think I might remove my Email address from their list.

2005-08-26 22:26:00 | A woman in a hot air balloon realized she was lost . She lowered altitude and spotted a man in a boat below . She shouted to him, "Excuse me, can you help me? I promised a friend I would meet him an hour ago, but I don't know where I am . " The man consulted his portable GPS and Replied, "You're in a hot air balloon approximately 30 feet above a ground elevation of 2346 feet above sea level . . You are 31 degrees, 14 . 97 minutes north latitude and 100 degrees, 49 . 09 minutes west longitude . " She rolled her eyes and said, "You must be a Democrat . " I am," replied the man . "How did you know?" "Well," answered the balloonist, "everything you told me is technically correct, but I have no idea what to make of your information, and I'm still lost . . Frankly, you've not been much help to me . " The man smiled and responded, "You must be a Republican . " "I am," replied the balloonist . "How did you know?" "Well," said the man, "you don't know where you are or where you're going . You've risen to where you are due to a large quantity of hot air . You made a promise that you have no idea how to keep, and you expect ME to solve your problem . You're in EXACTLY the same position you were in before we met, but somehow, now it's MY fault . "

2005-08-26 22:35:00 | You, me and other Westerners have no particular or greater right to oil as a person in China, or any other non-Western country. Whoever is producing the stuff is selling it to the highest bidder, and China in this case has greater economic clout than NZ. In terms of per capita consumption, the US, Australia and NZ consume much more oil than China. Google for oil per capita consumption and have fun. Time to get on yer bike, like they do in China.

2005-08-26 22:38:00 | NZ is still not bad to some countries . In Hong Kong its around $3NZ for a litre at the usual stations like Mobile, Shell etc . . . Well with the good NZ exchange rate $1 to a $6 (almost) its more like $2 . 70 . Heck back in 2000 the exchange rate was just $1 to $3 . 50 .

2005-08-26 22:45:00 | You miss my point vinref Everyone seems to be happy until America pokes there finger in to their problems, I believe that China got into its present problem by two Americans taking opposing sides many years ago . I made the posting with no intention of hurting a fellow countrymen And you can not help yourself in using this forum in having a dig at you fellow countrymen

2005-08-26 23:14:00 | A fair point vinref but I think the absolute values are more relevant than per capita usage (e.g. Nauru has a historical high per capita usage due to US phosphate interests). If you look at the absolute values for 2004, (www.infoplease.com) the US consumes more than double (almost triple) the amount of oil the next country consumes (China) with a lot less people. Just keep filling up those SUV's lads and add to the oil crisis. Interesting how the US per capita consumption is missing from the CIA websites - why? A

2005-08-26 23:25:00 | A follow up to my last posting . The only intention I had when I made the original posting that started this thread, was we need to rethink our thinking on how we consume oil in the future, I do not resent China getting off their bikes and into car, just pointing out that this is the true reason why the price of oil is taking off, this is nothing to do with me looking in a crystal ball, you need listen to the Australian ABC ex radio boardcast I gave the URL to and you will see too what I am on about . If this saves you stop purchasing a oil guzzling machine later in the day, next week, next month . . . . . . . who knows then everyone will be better off, even if it is some small effort, every added bit helps . I don't know why I have to defend myself each time I come to this web site forum, I just get sick of people who can not think outside the square .

2005-08-26 23:57:00 | I don't know why I have to defend myself each time I come to this web site forum, I just get sick of people who can not outside the square . I actually listen to the ABC here in Australia, and I know the article that you cited . Have a good look around the ABC site, as there are more, very high quality articles (multimedia) . Check out the ones about China being the greatest exporter of capital . This is strange, as most developing countries suck in capital, not export it . It is becuase the savings rate in China is very very high . China largely funds the war in Iraq and the American economy, especially the housing market, as they hold quite a few trillions in US currency and bonds . Now if they decided to trade those in for Euros . . . Your original post inferred that the US should not have helped China to modernise, by poking their fingers in there and causing "problems in China" . The Chinese, and every other peoples of the world including you, me and those fat Americans and Australians, should strive to improve their lot .
