383541 2005-08-24 23:05:00 A 73-YEAR-OLD transsexual is to have gender-changing surgery courtesy of the taxpayer.
In November Vicki Harvey, from Opunake, in Taranaki, sees a plastic surgeon in Christchurch, from where she will take the final step towards completing her transition to womanhood with the Government picking up the $30,000 bill.
After the operation she will be able to legally change the gender on her birth certificate to "female".
"I am entering the latter years of what has been a troubled life. I have no wealth, no income and I have a gambling habit.
Ms Harvey used to be a professional soldier, serving 20 years in the NZ Army during which she drove Centurion tanks but she went to a battalion reunion this year in a skirt and blouse.
Though she is puzzled by the necessity for it, she will first be assessed for suitability for "gender reassignment surgery" by the psycho-surgical team in November. If they give the go ahead, she will have the operation next year.
The surgeon is Dr Peter Walker, the only plastic surgeon in New Zealand doing transgender work.
Ms Harvey will have to pay the pre-op consultation costs of $1200 plus air fares, and post-operative support costs. The Ministry of Health will pay for the operation.
She was part of the political lobbying campaign that resulted in the Minister of Health agreeing to fund a small number of operations.
Ms Harvey, who lives in Opunake, says there are many misconceptions about gender issues. - NZPA

383546 2005-08-25 02:26:00 This astonishing use of public health funds was reported last week. Yet I haven't seen or heard any discussion about it until today. Words fail me.

Good luck to the lucky patient - if he/she is able to fool the health bureaucrats into a free op, then fine. But it seems like a fundamental misuse of health money to me.

383547 2005-08-25 02:27:00 As I understand it (according to the Minister of Health who was quizzed on this last night), this patient has NOT been accepted for free surgery,
but is merely one of several applicants.

He/she was interviewed on TV a month or so ago & gave reasons for wanting the operation.
My impression then was that chances were slim...

You have to be careful about what you read in the papers (or anywhere else really).

Here in Australia there was a massive furore about young Muslims refusing to "integrate into Australian society". The inference is that Australian society is evil, degenerate, morally-inferior etc etc. A "spokesman" said so in a widely viewed current affairs programme on TV. Talkback radio was bombarded by indignant white Australians (with red necks and red faces no doubt).

But it turns out the comments and the TV programme was heavily edited to give an impression. The "spokesman" said he was not a spokesman at all, and the comment he made a part of a long conversation that when edited became completely out of context. He actually said Muslims would never integrate to the degree that other cultures have, because of their stance on alcohol for instance, but would do all within their abilities to be loyal citizens etc etc ....

383549 2005-08-25 03:16:00 Well, if it isn’t a joke it’s a b.…y outrage.

Regardless of whether this dear old thing actually qualifies, it means that this amount of money is being earmarked for such procedures whilst kids die, heart patients die, cancer sufferers die and joint replacement patients wait a suffer.

Alarmingly, with an election pending, not one opposition party has come out swinging on this matter.

I suppose, having survived the operation, this weirdo will qualify for a $50,000 allowance to study Hip-Hop. Grrrrrrrr! :angry
