And rightly so, in my opinion. Read the newspapers, consumer magazines, PC magazines, and you will rarely read anything positive about Telecom (other than return on shares if you're an investor, that is). It's healthy to debate such topics and to voice discontent. Telecom would have no right to take such sites down as long as they act within the law. |

| 382281 | 2005-08-20 00:20:00 | To redo the infrastructure In NZ would be an enormous outlay in money. Some companies have done so overseas and can wear the loss for a few years as ultimately they will get decent returns on it due to the large population of these places. NZs population is small. Do the maths. Assume they did do it - and 1/3 or so of the households in NZ take up new broadband services with them - they still wouldn't recoup the losses in a long time. Telstra for instance - a large profitable company in Oz, why do they all not get together and help with the outlay? Oh no, they want someone else to do it and then sit back and demand to use the infrastructure for their own services. Hardly surprising Telecom isn't keen. |

Oh no, they want someone else to do it and then sit back and demand to use the infrastructure for their own services. Hardly surprising Telecom isn't keen.???? Telstra put in a whole new infrastucture here in CHCH. One central new exchange + data centre, fibre optic links to mux boxes thoughout the city, copper phone lines from the mux boxes to the customers and also cable services such as cable TV and cable internet. I thank them for this as it allowed me to have a cable modem. Before that i was reduced to dial up on the dregs of rotting dodgy substandard telecom lines that were the last working pairs that could be found from the original ones buried into Charlston CHCH decades ago. (Thankyou Telstra for freeing up so much of telecoms network, and giving me cable) They did the same in much of Wellington. Remember earlier this year when telecom lost fibre both sides of the north Island, and most phone and data services were down for the day? I was filesharing at full speed bringing in data from overseas. Telstra had independant systems all the way from CHCH overseas to AK and the Southern Cross cables. The only reason Telstra did jack in AK was that your wonderful Mayor, John banks decided that all the digging, general disruption, and new cables seen in areas where services are overhead would be bad..... You miss out... Blame Jonny, He's been so helpful to you! :D It would seem Telstra only wish to use the "compitition" (monopoly) where they are not permitted to build thier own systems. The fact that telecom had no provisions to move essentual data through Telstra backbone in emergency situations is yet another point against the integrety of telecom |

That site's only been going a couple of weeks. I believe Telecon.co.nz had hundreds of contributors in it's heyday. Read the papers. Telecom aren't everyone's cup of tea. And at the same time, there will be plenty of people like yourself who are quite content with them. |

| 382285 | 2005-08-20 02:44:00 | To be more accurate, Saturn and Clear poured all the money into the networks in Wgtn and Chch then Telstra picked up the company. Notice that not much has happened since. | PaulD (232) | ||
| 382286 | 2005-08-20 03:09:00 | "Notice that not much has happened since. " That's because it's very expensive to do this work. And there isn't the population to support it. I roughly worked out the cost for each potential connection in Christchurch if they had completed their estimated $20M installation in Christchurch. To cover just the interest on that money would have made the charges so high no-one would use their system. They've probably spent the $20M, and just stopped. And it's nowhere near full coverage. | Graham L (2) | ||
