382739 2005-08-24 08:21:00 I'm a fan of wave energy too. Problem is engineering for the marine environment. There have been various prototypes around the world which end up being smashed to pieces by storms.

So there is a significant heavy construction cost.

Three ways of using waves:

1 Place a dam/weir across the mouth of a tidal inlet. At high tide close a gate and run the water out through a generator. Lots of resource management issues though - blocking estuary, boat passage, etc.

2 Floats on the sea surface rise and fall operating a generator under the water with each movement.

3 Venturi. Ingenious idea where a pipe runs from land down into a tidal race. At the land end a propellor is placed in the pipe connected to a generator a la wind generation. At the sea end the water runs across the end of the pipe, (underwater) dragging air with it. This sucking action spins the propellor and makes electricity. All moving parts on land. Simple and cheap.

382740 2005-08-24 09:42:00 I first read about wave power in a 1978 'Insight' magazine, was astounded by the elegance of different methods being experimented with, way back then. Also reminds me of that great TV program 'Beyond 2000', how many neat ideas never came to fruition, and not necessarily due to feasability issues.

There needs to be a firm commitment for alternative power sources, once such a commitment has been made, prices will come down as efficiency in manufacturing is obtained. I'm aware that every technology has a dollar value placed on it as the bottom line. Government and people generally need to have enough foresight to realise the greater good of switching to clean alternative energy sources. We seem to take great pride promoting ourselves as a 'clean, green' country, which is actually pretty far from the truth. We'll reap the benefits switching now in the long term. Also bear in mind that the most research was done during the last major oil crisis, and only slowed down when more oil was found. It's always easier (and cheaper) to fall back on a known technology unless it's absolutely unavoidable.

I've been to some SE Asian destinations, and was utterly appalled at the complacency to an obvious pollution disaster zone. It is a common sight to see Police & citizens wearing face masks in a futile effort to filter the pollutants from their lungs. I've travelled in cabs and buses on long journeys with the windows closed (with coughing passengers) and the stinky air recycled on the car a/c. The driver believed it was cleaner than the air outside! (and it probably was) It would be great if every Kiwi could get an opportunity to see just how bad it can get.

382741 2005-08-27 07:14:00 Plod good ideas... I started volunteering with PetsOnTheNet.co.nz to try and develop a lost and found system but they said I had to not just volunteer but make everything I developed solely the property of pets on the net... I said it could benefit others and that was unfair, they lost interest at that point saying unless I gave them exclusive rights they didn't want it.

Communications have since failed.

Because of this I started www.pets.org.nz (http://www.pets.org.nz)

awesome idea though plod, i hope pets.org.nz lost and found, made to Royal New Zealand And Auckland SPCA information standards may help, if people will try and use it and promote it.

See they guy who build the lost and found website for new zealand
it has a lost and found section and stolen property section
was this you?
its a great idea
the current design sucks though.. i would have it way more user friendly... if its your website no offence
its great to see a website like this
mabie you could build andn advanced one..

382744 2005-09-07 12:02:00 seems to me if parliament was held on PCworld forums nothing would get done as everyone would immediately be sent home for 24 hours
Sorry this post is old but...
