| 667106 | 2008-05-17 04:57:00 | I am in the same situation as you. I got the 5c 'upgrade'. It was supposed to unleash the speed from 3500kbps to a 'as fast as your line can support' speed - theoretically around 7000kbps max. Well I used to actually get that 3500kbps sometimes, and it really was pretty good generally. Since I got 'as fast as my line can go' it is pretty awfull a lot of the time - early/mid evening it drops to dialup speed - It was like the dialup days. When its going well I'm getting around 3300kbps - but that doesnt happen too often. It certainly never got faster and is mostly slower. I reported it to ihug and they asked me for a whole lot of info (speed tests over several days, ping speeds, modem stats etc). Despite promising they would report back - nothing. I'm guessing the users (like me) that were in the 3500kbps plans got dumped in with all the other users in the newer 'unleashed' plans and we are all fighting it out. I find it depressingly interesting hearing you all complain about your current ihug/Vodafone speeds... in the 'good old days' I used to be able to download content at around 350-400kbs... I thought that was fast! Now, Vodafone have kindly 'upgraded' my account, with little warning and, ironically, it now costs an extra 5c/month. All that was meant to change was my data allowance was no longer subject to on-peak/off-peak times. Problem was I saw the word 'unleashed' hidden somewhere in their blurb... when will ISPs learn that when they 'unleash' internet in runs away?? I don't just have to buffer Youtube videos, I've gotta wait 10 mins for a 4 min video!! Most speed tests 'conveniently' don't work, but consumer.org.nz hits me with this: "Download Speed: 143 kbps (17.9 KB/sec transfer rate)". I refuse to blame geography or network conditions because it exactly coincides with my 'upgrade'....... |
