A basic UPS will usually not be online, i.e. running through the battery at all times, they will switch over to battery backup when problems are detected with the lag that is inherent in that method and therefore cannot offer the level of data protection offered by, the more expensive, online UPS.
Re surge, as per Graham L's explanation. It's handy but won't protect in all situations, which is why your machine should be set to gracefully shut down in the event of power issues. |
