| 383952 | 2005-08-27 05:13:00 | And to think that 150yrs ago no-one really knew what oil was or it's potential to revolutionise the world and the way we live in it. And to think that in 150yrs time there won't be any oil left and humans will be well on the way to extinction..... by their own hand. And may god rest our souls...amen.as we sink into the depths of despond. |

| 383956 | 2005-08-27 08:27:00 | A woman in a hot air balloon realized she was lost . She lowered altitude and spotted a man in a boat below . She shouted to im, "Excuse me, can you help me? I promised a friend I would meet him an hour ago, but I don't know where I am . " The man consulted his portable GPS and Replied, "You're in a hot air balloon approximately 30 feet above a ground elevation of 2346 feet above sea level . . You are 31 degrees, 14 . 97 minutes north latitude and 100 degrees, 49 . 09 minutes west longitude . " She rolled her eyes and said, "You must be a Democrat . " I am," replied the man . "How did you know?" "Well," answered the balloonist, "everything you told me is technically correct, but I have no idea what to make of your information, and I'm still lost . . Frankly, you've not been much help to me . " The man smiled and responded, "You must be a Republican . " "I am," replied the balloonist . "How did you know?" "Well," said the man, "you don't know where you are or where you're going . You've risen to where you are due to a large quantity of hot air . You made a promise that you have no idea how to keep, and you expect ME to solve your problem . You're in EXACTLY the same position you were in before we met, but somehow, now it's MY fault . " Nice one ERR, shame to hide it away, so here it is out in the open . Not sure how it related to this thread about oil though . Cheers Billy 8-{) |

Diesel (yes, there WAS such a man) from Germany a whole bunch of years ago: "The world's supply of oil is finite; when it's gone, there will be no more as we do not have dinosaurs and tropical rainforests manufacturing that product any more . " OK, so he was very correct, and yet totally disregarded as sincere to his cause . He invented the Diesel-Cycle engine, (the Otto-Cycle was for gasoline/petrol), and was at a complete loss as to why anyone would ever consider using the inferior fuel: petrol! Now that the tree-huggers have held sway in the world . . . even NZ . , . gads!, the effect of not producing clean fuel is met with demands of not letting countries and companies build better refineries and research centers . And now that the oil in the ground is almost all used up . . . nearly so with the advent of China and other 3rd world upstarts, then there is nothing illegal with gouging the population with higher prices at the wellhead . The Arabian oil states know they're on a slippery slope with no future, so they jack us all up . The US, with it's bleeding heart attitude (I am a citizen here and can say it if I want!), could not produce any more gasoline if they had free oil . There aren't enough refineries to do it, and today there is a new flash that two refineries are offline because of fires (set or ?) and will need 3 years to repair and rebuild . Huggers of trees are not just concerned with keeping refineries from refining or even being built . . they also redlined the nuclear generation of electricity and they are sure to find themselves in defense of the wind (Friends of The Wind) to NOT allow electrical generation via wind turbines . They have a point . . . . studies have not been launched to see the effects of all those fan blades and what they might have on injuring the wind . We await that decision after a few more years of government funded research and observation of the lividity levels and propogation differences of The Wind after all it's vital energies are removed making electricity . Now . . . COAL is a very useful commodity . It can be refined enough to burn in high-pressure combustion that produces no untoward gasses and evil smoke . It can be liquified and pumped as a motor fuel all over the world . . . but then that means pipelines and some carabou in Alaska might have to leap over the pipe and be late to it's appointment with a speeding locomotive . . . but that's another soapbox . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . There was a bumper sticker during the last energy crisis that I think I can remember: I hope all the Mxxxxx Fxxxxx ecologists die frozen to death in their high-rise condos clutching the power cord of their favorite heater . |

| 383960 | 2005-08-28 03:23:00 | Lets not forget that a huge proportion of China's consumption is in manufacturing the cheap plastic and electronic goods which us westerners buy in huge quantities . Let me go you one better: Caterpillar (the monster earth-moving equipment known all the world over) got in a good shot with a company in China---LOTUS LTD . by getting it's foot in the door of a real-true-honest-to-goodness manufacturing plant in THE newest place to be . OK . . . so what? The factory that Cat built (on land that it had to rent with no guarantee of re-leasing it when the contract expires), to manufacture scrapers and skiploaders makes Caterpillar equipment by day (8-hour shifts times 5 days a week) and then at night . . . the evil cobbler's elves come in and maunfacture LOTUS goods on the same assembly line for all the rest of the hours of the week . . no Saturdays or Sundays off either! . Here's the rub: ALL the parts and such are interchangeable and transferrable from LOTUS to CAT . . . even the paint! The good: worldwide contracters can get some really good-looking, but inferior earthmoving stuff real cheap! 1/3rd the cost! The bad: When a part breaks on the LOTUS, the repairs are made with genuine CAT parts . See? This way . . they replace the inferior castings and fittings and poor structured metal parts when they break and get a CAT part that will probably never break again . So . . who's at risk here? CAT for letting the Chinese produce inferior goods that look just like CATS . . . down to the same paint and designs for whatever total hours the factory is not in use by CAT . Who wins? The whole world does . . . killing the fatted US bird that makes the unquestionably best earth moving stuff ever . . and the Chinese for getting a cheap product into the free world (remember that olde phrase?) for consumption and use by those who don't give a royal defecation for quality and service after sales and reputation . AH! But we BUY this garbage-ola! Does anyone remember Japan after the war? Cheap . . non-durable goods--no service at all--paint that fell off--no support from the home country--radios and tape recorders that worked for a few days and other disposable goods to fill a sudden void and then . . SLAM! |
