667267 2008-05-11 20:45:00 which provider is this? So, is linux the preferred method of servers? acronum (13577)
667268 2008-05-11 23:43:00 Linux is definitely the preferred method. Im not sure of exact stats, but basically Linux / Apache runs the better portion of servers out there in the world (I have no references to back it up, but goto Wikipedia and look up Apache, there's prolly some stats there).

Certainly in NZ, from what Ive seen (This is personal observation here), there seems to be more PHP programmers than ASP by far... Maybe I just run in the wrong circles ;)

Linux hosting is pretty much *always* cheaper!

667269 2008-05-12 03:49:00 Chilling is right.

Linux is used far more (like a crazy amount) than any other server software other there like ASP. Its just cheaper to run and host and easier to configure.

667270 2008-05-12 04:45:00 See here:
en.wikipedia.org

"As of April 2008 Apache served 50.42% of all websites."
news.netcraft.com

Note:
Apache is generally run on a Linux server (Can be run on Windows though)
When setting it up, you'll generally use PHP with Apache over ASP or Frontpage extentions (Im no whizz with ASP so dont *really* know).

ASP.NET tends to be used more in corporate circles, with large companies like Intergen and so on using it.

667275 2008-05-12 06:09:00 Do you HAVE a MySQL server?

You'll need to make sure your web host provides a MySQL database for you (Sometimes its included free, sometimes it costs extra).
