667197 2008-05-08 05:57:00 AVG 8 no longer supports WIN9../ME, so all those using their older computers for email and keeping in touch with families will be faced with upgrading or replacing their perfectly adequate (up to now) equipment. For many of my elderly clients, they won't be able to afford this, so the pool of infected sytems potentially affecting lots of others will just increase. Avast seems to be the most useful alternative at present - does anyone have any other suggestions? bugsy (13718)

Aren't there other free alternatives. Also anyone still using those older versions of windows, they are no longer supported by MS, and thy no longer release security patches for them.

AVG takes longer to scan, because it also has a spyware checker in it.

667201 2008-05-08 20:59:00 I tried AVG 8 Free yesterday, and it came up with some 24,000 warnings of ActiveX Compatibility Registry entries, all saying they were spyware/adware/trojans.

This is a known problem:free.grisoft.com see item 1319.

These key entries are put there by Spyware Blaster and Spybot etc.

What is interesting is that all these entries are in the Internet Explorer key,

HKLM\software\microsoft\internet explorer\activeX compatibility from memory, so if you don't use IE they are probably not doing much good anyway.

But another thing, AVG8 Free does not detect any equivalent immunisations for Firefox, so I'm now not convinced of the usefulness of Spybot/Spyware Blaster "immunisations"

I have removed AVG8 and gone back to 7.5.

667202 2008-05-08 21:25:00 I downloaded AVG 8. I thought it took me around in circles, seemingly leading me to their pay versions. That may just be me, who knows enough to get myself into trouble..(according to husband)!
I used to use avast and liked it, when my HD crashed I found that they had downloaded AVG again. If I find too many difficulties I won't hesitate to go back to avast.

667203 2008-05-08 22:04:00 Thanks for all the input guys.

As I mentioned in Joe's thread I was worried that I had recommended AVG (8) to someone. I've now suggested he use Avast instead.

667204 2008-05-08 23:49:00 Just for interest I have deleted the HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ActiveX Compatibity key and made a backup .reg file just in case.

This file is some 10MB, so it is a sizeable chunk of registry.

If you dont use IE then this key should not be required, Microsoft have this to say about this registry key:
support.microsoft.com

So what. MS patches never protected anyone from malware anyway.

667206 2008-05-09 01:48:00 I tried AVG 8. It was very good but slowed the Internet down too much.
I am back on 7.5 & will change to Avast when AVG expires.
You will still be able to download updates from the AVG site, but not automatically.
