2005-08-22 01:20:00 | Oh come on now boys . Sure Cb may be a bit of a wingnut, but his idea is spot on . Show me any other serious forum on nthe web with only two forums? Two!! even the most amaturish empty forums you can imagine will have more . Why? Because its so obvious . 1 . More forums mean more specialization in discussion . It menas that people can talk about their specialist topics without them getting swamped by other posts . 2 More forums mean easier access to older posts on the topic you want 3 . More forums mean more contribution, means more helpers and posters, means more popularity . 4 . making forums takes 5 minutes, then just move the relevent posts into them, max 3 hours . 5 . Two catagories are too much for people to use??? What are we morons? I don't see anyone here who is unable to understand that a forum on "Windows operating systems" is about that topic and that topic only . This is merely an excuse from people unable and unwilling to face change . Its pathetic . If you can't handle more than 2 forums then get some lessons from a 10 year old . Its a no brainer, even if its proposed by someone who don't particularly like doesn't mean its a bad idea . Rise above your petty hates and attack the posts, and not the poster . Keep in mind this is first and foremost a computer help forum, If the content was broken down then how would you expect those that know a little less to have any clue where to post?

Its obvious that you consider people to stupid to work out how your own forum works, or even your site as it is (which is good btw) . If people really assume members here are such morons as unable to understand how forums work then why bother asking them for help . Are we populated totally by idiot-savants with only one skill? If you can make one and understand how it works then how about holding the hands of the admin and more challanged members here and show them how to make one without making sarcastic comments . |

2005-08-22 01:42:00 | coffee and stress . . . . but my point is valid, treating the members like idiots helps no one . It has always suprised me that such a massive resource like PCworld is served by such a small messageboard with only 2 catagories . (Sort of like a weightlifter and his steriod affected member) . I have been hanging around here for a number of years and it has not grown at all . PCworld has the potential to develop a huge fan base if it was set up anew . Even if you took the forum titles from the mag sections . The increase in users would feed back to increased mag sales, and visa versa . All it takes is some vision .

2005-08-22 02:40:00 | Vision sure, but lets be realistic: Ive got a problem where my PC wont boot. Is it because Im missing the MBR? Then is it Software "XP" or software "DOS". Is it coz my HDD is dead? Point is the site is unique because of its simplicity.

2005-08-22 03:16:00 | My post before was not meant as a dig, infact comments re the forum are all good and are appreciated. Just realise that forum categories are something that we have discussed many many many times. The reason for not doing categories is exactly what Chill says above. Its very possible a newbie would not know where to post their question. You may not realise it but there are quite a few newbies that come to the forums, and some of them email us needing help with signing up to the forum. Our last forum, which used Jive, had only the one forum but when we swapped to vBulletin we decided to add the "chat" forum since the "off topic" posts were becoming more and more frequent. Users were finding it more difficult to separate the tech questions from the off topic. I'm sorry, I disagree with your comment re the site "not growing". PressF1 has it's many long time regular members, but it has grown into a great community of various levels of ability, and even location around the globe. We continue to be surprised at the member numbers and traffic levels. Cheers :)

2005-08-22 03:45:00 | I have the solution. When anyone registers, give them their own forum. That will solve all the problems, real, perceived, or imagined. If people can't post in any forum other than their own, they'll never post in the wrong one. | Graham L (2) | |
2005-08-22 04:34:00 | I think we need at least two more categories: Linux/*BSD/Mac (OS's, applications, news), and Web (design, hosting, help and news). These two topics are forever buried in PF1, which is mostly a Windows help forum. | vinref (6194) | |
2005-08-22 04:45:00 | No . No more categories (forums) are needed . If people make reasonable Subject lines, there's no problem . We'll always have a few who think that HELP!!! URGENT!! is an informative heading, sure to attract readers . :( That will head their question about MS Office formatting in the Chat forum now; if they have a few extra choices they'll put it in the Linux/etc or Web one if they exist . Just for variety . :groan: Linux/BSD questions aren't lost . I can find them in the present system . Jen can find them . Chilling can find them . vinref can find them . If we can find them, they can't be buried . :D
