Notice that not much has happened since.Saturn was owned by telstra all along. Clears efforts, which had nothing to do with Saturns alternative local networks, were national. However, now telstra has bought out clear, thus providing a national backbone covering most of the country, and a local custemer base in Wellington and CHCH. It would appear the purchasing clear was done rather than continue the roll out of the saturn/telstraclear alternative local network. I'm just glad they did my street before the rollout stopped. Oh yes, one or two areas. And there reasons for skipping the entire rest of the Sth Island? And the Nrth Island apart from Akld are???The " one or two areas" were the 2 biggest citys in our islands other than AK. They did do much of Wellington, but buying Clear seemed to spend the last of the budget. Given the relative ease that wireless systems can be put in place, it would be wise for Telstra to just add customers to thier wired areas as much as possable, as they are, and provide bandwidth for paradise and other ISPs, as they do. The future seems to be wireless. Further investmest in wired customer networks outside of the 2 main centres they were allowed to set up in would seem unwise. |

| 382288 | 2005-08-20 05:42:00 | "Notice that not much has happened since. " That's because it's very expensive to do this work. And there isn't the population to support it. I roughly worked out the cost for each potential connection in Christchurch if they had completed their estimated $20M installation in Christchurch. To cover just the interest on that money would have made the charges so high no-one would use their system. They've probably spent the $20M, and just stopped. And it's nowhere near full coverage. My point about Telecom not being keen....And Telstra not doing much else other than the ONE OR TWO areas, and I don't care how big Wellington is - lets see them do rural NZ - hahaha, watch it never happen. |

And Telstra not doing much else other than the ONE OR TWO areas, and I don't care how big Wellington is - lets see them do rural NZ - hahaha, watch it never happen . Well not in a wired form, and why would they? hell, point one dish at a modified cellphone tower on a hilltop somewhere and cover a huge area in one quick hit . . . . . Makes much more sense than wires thinks me . Of course woosh are allready doing that, so watch them grow :D And when i finally move from my cave to my twuck, hopefully the technology for a wireless connection is established enough that six wheels can support a fully conected home . Also, if you'dcare to take a look at whats being done in parts of the USA, we see that large rural areas of cowboy land are now getting wireless internet . Slashdot is full of articles on this sort of thing . |

Slashdot is full of articles on this sort of thing. The US has truckloads more people than NZ. I know I'd prefer being surrounded by no houses and stuck with dial up to being jammed in like a sardine but with broadband. |

I firmly believe that this is the answer for here as well. | personthingy (1670) | ||
