2005-08-21 06:17:00 | Problem: The category system is clumsy. Who wants to browse through heaps of posts? Idea: you may want to learn about a particular area, but the categorisation system is primitive. Solution #1 System Developers I will suggest to VBulletin, Invision and PHPBB a new taxonomy system of 1 Post in many categories. I have already suggested in the last few days Answers/Questions facility with the ability to give feedback when the answer is approved and searching for items which are an answer or a question. Solution #2 System for pressf1.pcworld.co.nz I would like to suggest a new category System this isnt exact but may give some idea Software Software DOS Software Windows Operating Systems Software Windows Applications Use list similar to download.com for top categories Software Linux Software Macintosh Hardware PCs Macintoshs Displays Printers Scanners Networking WAN LAN Internet User Guides Buying Tutorials Internet Web Browsing Emailing Web Design - Programming Web Design - Presentation Web Design - Content Web Design Maintenance To make the point clear: what I suggest macromedia is starting to implement recently, it is the future for the multicategory system which seems only the few market leaders have. Do you want to be at the best standards possible? Then it may be advisable this idealization of systemology should be considered. If you've ever setup any of the boards that you mention, you'll already know that all of them can be setup in such a way as you describe. It may mean that some mods need installed but they are all capable of such structures. I think they're way ahead of you on this one "Taxonomy" hmmm... I'm gonna keep that one for the next scrabble session, should be worth a few points

2005-08-21 11:06:00 | Nah it is a silly idea. There isn't that many posts and all you end up is moaning about categories. One post in many categories is also know as "cross-posting".

2005-08-21 22:08:00 | We have talked about this numerous times, but as people above have mentioned two categories is hard enough for some people. The search is a great utility if you take the time to get to know how to use it - and far better than our last forum's. And yes, vBulletin actually already has a "feedback" rating for threads, but we have not activated it as it could be misleading... check http://www.vbulletin.com for the feature list.

2005-08-22 00:54:00 | I agree... Its hard enough as-is. This keeps it simple. Nothing worse than having a post int he wrong thread. This way its seen by all. As for wading through old posts, just learn to search better or more specifically :)

2005-08-22 01:13:00 | Oh come on now boys . Sure Cb may be a bit of a wingnut, but his idea is spot on . Show me any other serious forum on nthe web with only two forums? Two!! even the most amaturish empty forums you can imagine will have more . Why? Because its so obvious . 1 . More forums mean more specialization in discussion . It menas that people can talk about their specialist topics without them getting swamped by other posts . 2 More forums mean easier access to older posts on the topic you want 3 . More forums mean more contribution, means more helpers and posters, means more popularity . 4 . making forums takes 5 minutes, then just move the relevent posts into them, max 3 hours . 5 . Two catagories are too much for people to use??? What are we morons? I don't see anyone here who is unable to understand that a forum on "Windows operating systems" is about that topic and that topic only . This is merely an excuse from people unable and unwilling to face change . Its pathetic . If you can't handle more than 2 forums then get some lessons from a 10 year old . Its a no brainer, even if its proposed by someone who don't particularly like doesn't mean its a bad idea . Rise above your petty hates and attack the posts, and not the poster .

2005-08-22 01:17:00 | I think every thread should have its own catagory, then we can hang some huge data-management front-end on the site to simplify the user exploration.. Should only cost thousands and require many hundreds of hours of input, But at the end of it we can have a massivly more complicated forum with a simplistic interface that could probally make it NEARLY as simple to use as it is now. Let me know if your interested, I'll write up 3 pages of gibberish and attach a bill.....
