2008-05-10 03:13:00 | Hey Team, Lately, my laptop and d-ink wireless media player have been suffering from stuttering playback streaming media from my main pc . normally they stream perfectly (mp3s, xvid, mpeg format files) not long ago i bumped the aerial on my wireless router and since then that's when ive had the trouble . the laptop says excellent signal strength 54 mb/s like it always does, but obviously in reality it must be way down on what it usually is . how do i find out what the bandwidth speed is now? connected the laptop and wireless via ethernet and as expected, perfect playback so that confirms it isnt the main pc . any help or clues appreciated . windows xp professional sp2 .

2008-05-10 12:05:00 | well guess i had to help myself a bit since no one else is lol jkes :) downloaded a program called qcheck, which measures the throughput from any part of the network to the other. it needs to be installed on each pc/laptop on the network and after a couple of tests, it shows some really wildly changing throughput.. anywhere from 11 Mb's to 800 kB/s, so this is obviously causing the stuttering streaming .. being that i bumped the aerial, is that probably the main cause? its affected the signal? aerial doesnt look that bad actually, tightened it up and feels just as solid as the other one. is an smc barricuda g wireless router. anyone else with similar trouble? okay... tested from laptop to the pc and it shows a consistent 25 Mb/s... okay im confused :(

2008-05-10 12:17:00 | Have you tried something like NetStumbler to see what other wireless networks are around you? It may be that you just need to change the channel yours is on. Haven't got a new cordless phone have you? You could also try moving the wireless access point to another location. I doubt bumping the antenna would cause any problems as I'm pretty sure they are just a plastic surround with a flexible cable inside which wouldn't have broken from a bump.

2008-05-10 13:21:00 | downloaded netstumbler and theres this telstraclear wireless networking showing?? must be a neighbour somewhere. but they show as no signal at all, which is wierd.. they're on channel 11, type = AP, WEP encrypted, SNR = 11, signal -83, noise -100, snr = 17. im currently on channel 10* (not sure what the asterisk is) is this telstra clear wireless someone's cordless??

2008-05-10 22:19:00 | It may be just picking up the Telstra network on the fringe so not showing any signal strength. I would perhaps try your wireless network on channel 1.

2008-05-10 23:53:00 | okay, same thing on channel 1 cyabro. when i play files from the laptop on the pc. PERFECT. no stuttering whatsoever which confirms Qcheck's constant throughput of around 25Mb/s. seems like whatever channel i have it on its the same, which is driving me nuts. think i've tried most of the channels from 1 through to 13 and same results. tried the various modes like long distance b+g, normal b+g, g only, b only, changed from auto transmission rate to fixed ones like 54,36,24 etc. unplugged my cordless and same thing too. i cant understand how it can be perfect in one direction and wildly fluctuate in the other direction. :badpc: :help: :crying
