667829 2008-05-09 22:59:00 Have the job of fixing my nephews notebook,On powerup it just sits there with a black screen and blue lights lit up on the keyboard.Hold power button down to turn it off, wait a few seconds then try start again and the screen lights with Compaq in the middle ,bottom left these messages.

"Press (esc) to change boot order." Tried this and it comes up with DVD drive as an option!

"Press(F10) to enter setup." Tried this and the Bios screen comes up with options.
If I leave it after these messages (about 30 secs) the screen goes to a cursor flashing in the left top corner.Pressing keys at random I see the brief flash of "operating system not found" And it sits there like this.

Going the F10 way into Bios I've checked boot order which is USB floppy,DVD drive, notebook hard drive .Accepted default settings.Back to black screen.Held power button down to kill it. Press again and this time Windows has started.

Went Start/Turn pc off/restart.........back to black screen. Saw the DVD drive light flash, then it just sits......And back to the beginning.

It will boot up off the DVD drive so I can do, and will do, an image using Acronis.
Any clues please.

667830 2008-05-09 23:04:00 Um you would have to get into windows first, before you can make the image.

Or before you can boot from DVD (This option assumes, theres is something on the DVD, and it would have to be bootable, and it may not work with an image).

So you cant select the hdd in the BIOS as the boot disk?

Change it to notebook hdd, take the cd/dvd and / or floppy out. Save the BIOS settings then reboot

What happens then?

667831 2008-05-09 23:08:00 I can do an image straight off the Acronis recovery disc without it being installed on the pc, Speedy.
Just tried again after it sitting there with the cursor flashing. After second try to start it went to Windows after the Compag logo screen.
Got to go now but will try your suggestions later, thanks.

667832 2008-05-11 21:11:00 Well have done a bit of searching (including my own post, scary) and can't find any solution.Have managed to do an image by installing Acronis when it booted once, so at least that's something.

"I can do an image straight off the Acronis recovery disc without it being installed on the pc, Speedy."

Found that by booting off the recovery cd it saw the plugged in USB drive but didn't see the hard drive in the Compaq. And when the black screen happens, the DVD drive light flashes but it won't boot up off the recovery cd.Nothing!
Time for a tech.

667833 2008-05-11 23:12:00 I just had a customer with a V3000 that sounds like it had similar problems.
Laptop was running fine then locked up. When they tried powering off & on again lights would come on but nothing on the screen.
It went back to an HP service agent who replaced the faulty mainboard.

667835 2008-12-23 13:29:00 Hey all. I just recently started having this problem. Out of no where. I powered my laptop off then went to go power it back on and only the blue lights came on. After taking the battery out and disconnecting the power cord for a bit I was able to get it to bootup. After searching the web and seeing multiple people having the same issue, I have tried the following reseat the Memory and HDD, completed bios update to f39, and it still gets stuck at the blank screen after a reboot, or power down. Has anyone figured out what is causing this issue? I'm hoping it's def. not a System Board issue as my laptop is out of warranty. markjnj (13725)
667836 2009-01-01 20:06:00 I'm not much help to you markjnj.Asked recently if the boy had taken it in, and no he hasn't.So have checked and the bios is the latest version.Sometimes won't boot off any cd,Linux etc.Other times starts up fine and will run for hours.Have updated it to SP3 etc. Neil McC (178)
