667620 2008-05-09 05:15:00 K so it was late Thursday and I was helping a friend install XP on his EeePC, we're chatting online, and I realize now that Ive ditched a few Doze apps, there's no reason why I'd need to continue using it.

Everything backed up to the SDHC card (All of what, 3 folders?) and I was ready to format. So, I go distro hunting, and come across Ubuntu Mobile Edition:
www.ubuntu.com

Looks good enough, find an install guide, all goes easily enough now that I have an external CD-Rom.

Anyways, install done, still not got Wireless working (Just need a GUI to configure it, wifi detected OK), and its pretty cool :)

The large fonts freaked the heck outta me at first, but its mainly on the parts that are for Touch (fingers), and its not too bad. Its encouraged me to get myself a Touchscreen for my EeePC now (Ordering tomorrow).

Anyways, already had a couple of people ask me a bit about it so I thought I'd make a PF1 post about it and show some screenies:

Pidgin chat. Large text, surprisingly doesnt bother me...

Attached file: ume2.png (www.imagef1.net.nz) (61 KB)
Pidgin Buddy list, takes up the whole screen

The Desktop - Still working out how to add / remove Icons :(

Attached file: ume4.png (www.imagef1.net.nz) (113 KB)
Its MidBrowser (Mobile Internet Device Browser), based on FF3b5. Ads are still broken here on PF1 ;) Tabs are rather tiny up top and there's not much room to see what you're typing in the Address Bar or Google Search, but its enough. Zoom in / out just like on the Wii!

The Music Player only plays music thats in /home/user/media/audio and no sub-dirs, which kinda sucks.. That needs changing, coz my medias on the SDHC card. Symlinked from /media/sdb1/Music to the above folder, and it only finds songs in the root of that dir. Hopeless, but still a nice lil music player

Uploading a file to ImageF1, takes the whole screen, but Ive kinda grown to expect that. At least the window is movable.

Firefox + On-Screen Keyboard. Played with it using the Mouse, seems like it'll be MEAN when I get a touchscreen. Also has Drag / Move functionality so you can drag anywhere thats not a link or whatever and have the page move up / down / left / right :) Also reminds me of Opera on the Wii...

Things like the Tickboxes & Radio Buttons are larger, even if you shrink the size of the text, means its always usable with your fingers, even large fingers :)

So its got a way to go, but its making waves in the right direction for a UMPC OS!

Now, off to go get WiFi working...

667621 2008-05-09 05:22:00 Thats quite an impressive UI. simple, clean and polished. I take it you will be running that on your EEEEPC? Is the touch screen one or two fingers? vitalstatistix (9182)
667622 2008-05-09 05:46:00 Yes, on the EeePC. Eventually aiming to get some sort of multi-point thing going with the Wii Remote (Apparently its easier to get going under Linux that XP, and XP was a bit of a PITA on my other Desktop), but not just yet.

So yeah, no touchscreen *yet*, its being ordered tomorrow and I have no idea about how well its going to work.

And yes, this is my EeePC, hence the *tiny* 800x480 resolution :D
