384464 2005-08-29 06:28:00 "As reported on On the Media and Business 2.0, Google appears to be purchasing dark (unused) fiber optic cable across the United States with the intention of building its own alternative parallel internet that would presumably be called GoogleNet. Possessing such a thing could allow Google to offer internet access in the form of free wifi or other means and create a powerful captive marketing audience which Google could monopolize. Outside of these marketing opportunities, such a development in infrastructure could help reduce Google's long-term content delivery costs were it to take on more bandwidth-intensive activities in the future."

Sorry if this was already posted... google is taking over the internets.

384472 2005-08-29 08:49:00 Ye Gods, here we go again. Only now it is Googlescum. Two guys start a business up in a shed (or somesuch) it worked & now they are making money. If people did not want their product, they would not use it. I say "Good on em". If anyone thinks they would do differently if THEY founded a successful business then they are lying to themselves. Do I smell jealousy? Tall poppy syndrome? PJ :2cents: :2cents: Poppa John (284)
384473 2005-08-29 09:15:00 if it was true, the i bet it will only be avaliabe in the statesIf you keep an eye on slashdot, or anything that's newsy of that vien, you'll find that wifi networks are going to be all over the states. But yes, i agree, it's going to be some time before we see that sort of thing here, other than cafes and the likes.

BTW, Slashdot have an excellant rss feed, if you can be bothered running a decent RSS feed reader.
