2005-09-01 05:06:00 | Yeah.. that's all backend stuff, not linux desktop stuff.. I'm fairly sure Steve Jobs would shoot someone if he came in and found they had stoped using Macs for the front end at Pixar. -QyietBack end or not, the actual number crunching that got the right pixels in the right places was done on a few racks of Linux powered machines......... I admit i had no idea what the human interface is/was in this process, till i asked our all knowing friend "google". www.infosatellite.com

2005-09-01 05:14:00 | The point is, Linux isnt windows If you want a Windows clone, then try ReactOS! Linux has better out-of-the-box support for all the hardware Ive had to use than Windows has. Admittedly I dont have WinModems. Otherwise, it fully supported my new 64-bit system Motherboard. My SB!Live Soundcard. My Family's K7S5A Motherboard + Onboard sound... My ATI-Graphics card (x64). XP hasnt supported these, yet you expect this from Linux? You're not going to get a Windows clone, dont ask for it. You arent being forced (Or shouldnt be) by others here to use it. Its nice to have a wish-list, but pursue it actively if you're honestly fed up with Windows. Want to game? Then get Cedega + Point2Play. There's Pros + Cons of both OS's. I dont have to Defrag, dont get BSOD's, dont have to worry about viruses, spyware, trojans, worms...... Security Updates? Some.... Not as many as my familys WinXP box mind you.

2005-09-01 07:54:00 | This is no different ot the Mac vs PC debate. We'll all just go round in circles. Us PC people - our point is: Games are one of the main reasons, a huge, enormous, critical reason we don't want to use Linux. End of story. Linux people can post links to all the emulators they want. I am not ignorant of them - I have a friend who is a Linux fan - so I know what they are like. And they don't come close to off the shelf. out of the box game play. Until then we will all agree to disagree. I don't say it is a rubbish O/S but until there is proper support for games I won't use it. Anyway most of us are techs - we are quite capable of tweaking windows to tame it.

There's some really odd ideas that come up and get challenged, so that's got to be healthy. It's just when it get all silly, personal, and emotional that it becomes a waste of time. |

2005-09-01 09:27:00 | Emulators??? I'm an all or nothing Linux user. If I can't do something in Linux (which is decreasing daily) I will boot to Windows to do it. No emulator involved. I use Linux about 98% of the time. I like linux, it suits me, it suits my needs (I find it slightly quicker, its definately more secure, and it makes me think), to me Windows is a no-brainer (just my opinion) I enjoy the configuration battles, wondering why something won't work, and then the satisfaction when I get it to work (either alone or with some help/advice). Currently I am using Gentoo... its hard ... I love it!! Today I managed to get my sounds and usb printer working (YES!!) btw thanx again Chilling for the help with the kernel config :) Anyway, I like playing round with things, getting them going etc, which is why I will stay with Linux. Besides that, the next version is free, and the next; and so on, and so on .....

2005-09-01 09:56:00 | I'm an all or nothing Linux user . If I can't do something in Linux (which is decreasing daily) I will boot to Windows to do it . No emulator involved . . . . . . That sounds not unlike how i started my clueless Linux journey . Originaly I had Vanessa the 98SE Windows box, and i built Sam the SusE 8 . 0 Linux box to match . Vanessa had the CD burner, and Sam had 2 biggish HDDs . Other than that the two machines were of identical spec . Gradually i found myself drifting from using Vanessa to using Sam untill it got to the point that Vanessa was only used for burning CDs and running a windows-only file sharing program . As an OS SusE was fun to tweak . Once i got my head around the logic, i found it very consistant, where as i found windows more scattered, and dare i say, secretive . Vanessa needed reboots every 2 - 3 days . Sam needed to be powered down if i made hardware alterations, but generally was up for months at a time . When i got Flaptop, the question wasn't what OS, but what distro! :D

2005-09-01 10:24:00 | ./configure make make install Argh!!! attack of the command line!! really... you windows users have to harden up. That's lovely. You do all the command line stuff you need. But what about those users that are first time computer buyers? The ones that go out and get warehouse dells. Yes, everyone here knows at least one. How on god's earth are they going to know that. 3 lines seems simple enough to us here, but they won't have a hope in hell of trying to get something like that to work. I'll use my grandmother for example. What would be the point in trying to get her to switch to something like linux? Yes, there might be slightly less mantainence, but I've got it set up so it downloads security and antivirus regularly, and has a constant firewall for if she does go on the net. Because all the security side is automated, and as such she dosen't get any nastyware, what else could there possibly be for convincing her to switch, thus learning a new system and figuring out where everything is? That said, I have got a Xandros dual boot setup. Haven't used it in a while, but Loonix sure is improving
