1357302 2005-09-01 04:05:00 Hhel: Have a look at LaTeX for mathematical equations. It's the industry (AMS) standard for publication (or used to be). Have you tried Gnuplot? It's pretty good.

Prescott: You don't have to change. It isn't compulsory. Of course you can't use Windows XP, either. It won't "work on all laptops wiothout tweaking". It won't work on a lot of desktops, too. Windows "Longhorn", or "long wait" isn't going to meet that standard either. Back to DOS? Or CP/M? Or an abacus?

Metla: How do you have time to be here if you are using the 50 billion (presumably essential to the preservation of civilisation as we know it) software titles that are unmatched on Linux? Do I sense hyperbole? Or just nonsense?

I'll do the same on Windows and return with my preference's and capabilities of each.Well I have never needed to use a video editor on any OS so can't really comment on the pros and cons, But here, have your choice of 7 (migrate2linux.n-ix.com)

1357304 2005-09-01 04:15:00 Wise choice, select 5 or so video editing applications that run nativly on Linux and then get back to us..Armed with a nasty wee laptop with onboard video, i can't test the GIMPs ability to edit video. My laptop can barely play video! However, GIMP is allready installed in my system, it came with the OS of course.

However why would i need to do this?

I have no desire to edit video, if i did i'd send it to my friend in Wellington who does this sort of thing. Just to throw a big side issue in the works, i think she uses a mac.

Hyperbole no doubt.

Though choice is a good thing, Just like my local libary has more books then I could read in a lifetime, but could be vastly improved by doubling or tripling the amount.

The Gimp can edit video?

News to me if it does.Anyhow, the point was to demonstrate how Linux and its 3rd rate apps aren't going to cut it for everyone,And that there is a world of mature software outside the realm of gaming that Linux can't touch.

Anyhow, I have wandered off my path and have found myself attacking Linux, which is not my stand-point at all, I applaud Linux, though I think they have taken a mis-step or 2.

As to your freindly who uses a Mac, Nothing wrong with that, they are fine at video-editing........If a little expensive.

1357307 2005-09-01 04:31:00 As in my considration Linux losts its Standrization i.e. there is so many types of linux such as red hat,Mandrek etc. So for the users it is cumbersome to find the right linux product to use. It is also so clumsy or hard for the Windows Users to turn towards the linux OS.I have also one strong reason for not using the linux is that there is no one stand in back of linux But in the case of Windows, the worlds most richest man is standing. sun (8791)
1357308 2005-09-01 04:32:00 The Gimp can edit video?Yip... poke around it a bit and you'll find options popping up for doing just that....

I have no idea how well it works though.

I think you'll find Disney/Pixar are/were largely creating thier animated movies on Linux clusters.. I read an article in Linux Journal a year or so ago all about it. :D

1357309 2005-09-01 04:38:00 As in my considration Linux losts its Standrization i.e. there is so many types of linux such as red hat,Mandrek etc. The major difference between distros is just what is or isn't included, and the approach these different packages/programs may do things. In essence, if it runs on fedora it will run on SusE, Mepis etc. It just may not be included with the initial installation of the OS.

A quick squiz a the main PF1 forum suggest theres more than one way to skin a cat under windows as well. I don't see the difference really. To any given problem there is many solutions, irrespective of platform.

I'm fairly sure Steve Jobs would shoot someone if he came in and found they had stoped using Macs for the front end at Pixar.

1357311 2005-09-01 04:59:00 Does it make you feel good that the world's richest man is standing behind his products?

Have you read the "guarantee" that comes with his products? The software is guaranteed to the extent that if the media is faulty, they will replace it . That's it . If the software is faulty, that's your problem .

I like the feeling that hundreds of the worlds best programmers are driven by their pride in good work . That's the backing of Linux .

I see that the manufacturer of some of the fastest biggest video cards use a 10000 square foot room of Linux computers for their design work . They are adding 1000 CPUs each month . NASA use a lot of Linux computers . They want results .
