1357282 2005-08-31 06:53:00 ...Driver implementation was poor in W98,Linux makes it look like a stroke of genius, layered in user freindliness and goodwill.

God help the poor user who has to replace his modem at some stage down the road, sure no problem for a linux head, they have put in the effort already, and may well want to wade through the 34 cryptic steps to get it working.Let me tell you a story. I have one of the first Mp3 players ever. A 32MB Rio. It connects via a parallel cable.

Rio gave up supporting this baby a long time ago, and when I went to install it on my WinXP machine, there was an entire weekend of hunting the net, and hurling abuse in Rio's direction. at the end of it, the conclusion.. get a win98 box to upload songs, or ditch the rio.

Dual boot back up to linux (I think it was mandrake at the time) have a bit of a poke around.. no go.. search the web, perform 34 cryptic steps :) , and 2 hours later my MP3 player was perfectly functional. (allthough still 32MB, and fairly crappy)

What this little story taught me is that most the ease in installing devices in windows is due to the fact that the hardware maufacturers provide you with the drivers. If they don't, leveling the playing feild, windows hardware support suddenly becomes a very very nasty place.

I suggest that if replace the modem with one that has linux support from the manufacturer, they would be away in almost no time.

1357283 2005-08-31 07:04:00 I'm quite aware of OpenGL - but you can probably count on one hand games that fully support it these days...

I mean - come on - what do we have Unreals, Quakes, RTCW, Doom3 (anything from id)...I'm not sure I follow HadO, are you looking for somthing that does the same work as DirectX? or are you looking for DirectX emulation? because you can get that too (http://www.transgaming.com/), although it is not perfect, it is good.

1357284 2005-08-31 07:10:00 DX emulation but not :)

I have had a look at that site before and still have FC4 installed on a dual boot with Radeon (OpenGL) drivers installed - one day I will give it a try (cedega?) but from what I saw on the site most of the games I would be playing weren't emulated 100% - definately heading in the right direction though - good to see .

1357285 2005-08-31 07:50:00 Funnily enough, I remember nVidia making a Powerpoint presentation on their site showing how you can get better performance out of Linux and OpenGL than compared to their windows driver counterparts. They also stated at that point that their linux drivers were still very 'immature' and performance would be greatly improving with future releases even on the same hardware compared to the minor improvements gained with the windows driver updates Chilling_Silence (9)
1357286 2005-08-31 09:24:00 For most of this year, I have been using Xandros 3 . 0 exclusively . I do have XP as well and it just sits in the background .

There are, for my purposes, only two things that I haven't been able to do with Linux . Firstly, as a retired maths teacher, I have yet to find an equivalent specialised maths equation editor and graph plotter to rival Efofex from Australia that works with MS Word . Secondly, the digital camera program that comes with KDE doesn't appear to have a red eye reduction tool like the one in ACDsee . The rest of the time, I am completely happy with linux and would not wish to return to general use of XP .

Cheers .

1357287 2005-08-31 09:37:00 i will swap over to linux when:
- it has FULL out of the box support for all games
-is compatable with all my hardware
-will work will all laptops without any tweaking

I guess you would have come across these ( . n-ix . com/groups/linuxsoft . php?group=223" target="_blank">migrate2linux . n-ix . com) and rejected them for various reasons .

The Gimp, has read eye reduction .

1357289 2005-08-31 10:14:00 is compatable with all my hardware

Eh! Is Windows, or do you purchase hardware that says Window XP Compatible on the box? Will Vista be compatible with your current hardware or will you purchase hardware that says Window Vista Compatible on the box. Then, find out that the new
MS patch renders 1/2 you shiny new hardware incompatible?

Horses for courses, of course.

1357290 2005-08-31 10:47:00 Thanks MurrayP I will have a look at these in my leisure. I had seen some of them.

Cheers,

1357291 2005-08-31 11:07:00 ........ maybe it's just adjusting to a different way of doing things that's the challenge? :waughh:I'll agree with you there. I've only run Linux at home for the last 3 or 4 years. I find it intuitive and very easy to set up compared to the one and a half nights it took to set up XP on a friends machine with all its updates, NAV, virus definition downloads, multi reboots after installing this or that, or in somecases half way through installing some thing or other.....

I'm used to Linux, and therefore its much easier for me to use than windows which i am not used to. I have no desire to learn much about windows either as i have too little time to spare for all that carry on.
